The game started with both teams forcing the play to get that important first goal. Orono finally opened the scoring at 6:47 when Jason Hansen dug the puck out of the Lakefield corner and passed to Brandon Ovenden in the slot for a quick flip past the goalie. Lakefield fought back and tied the game at 3:27 to end the scoring in the first period. The rest of the first period and the start of the second was hard- fought until Orono pulled ahead again at 7:47 of the second. On this 1 play, Scott Hentig carried the puck along the boards in the Lakefield end, passed to Brandon Ovenden behind the net who decoyed the defense out of position and gave the puck to Stephen Shetler who was alone in the slot. Orono scored again just under three minutes later on a determined effort. Dan Walters 1 raced for the puck in the Lakefield corner and centered a pass to Greg Hooper at the crease. Greg's first try was blocked, but he managed to get the loose puck before the goalie could cover it and, with a spin-around move at the lip of the crease to avoid the defense, backhanded the puck along the ice: into the corner of the net. The rest of the second period saw many opportunities opportunities for both teams to add to their totals but the defense and goaltending of both teams was more potent than the offense. The third period was a change in intensity as the offense of both teams became more active. Orono added another goal at 13:42 when Scott Hartwig cleared the puck to Brandon Ovenden in Orono's end. Brandon cleared the puck into centre centre ice where Jason Hansen outrac- ed the Lakefield defense to the puck and, with a low shot to the far corner corner of the net, put Orono up 4 to 1. End-to-end action was the fare for most of the rest of the period, with goalies, defense and goal posts stopping whatever came at them. At *6:19, Orono struck again. Brandon . Ovenden dumped the puck from the corner back to John Buttigieg at the defense. John's shot went through a maze of bodies to the crease just as Brandon got there and he was able to deflect the puck into the net, Orono's next goal showed good play all around as Sean McKenzie blocked a clearing pass at the Lakefield blue line and fed Stephen Shetler a pass along the boards. Stephen skated along the boards to the corner and layed a perfect pass in front of the net to Jason Mercer who one-timed the puck to' the open side. Orono's fourth goal of the period came very quickly from a face-off in the, Lakefield end. Dan Walters won the face-off and flipped the puck to Greg Hooper on the lip of the crease for a quick shot that eluded the goalie at 4:13. Lakefield put on pressure and managed to score two quick goals just seventeen seconds apart, at 2:50 and 2:33, but Orono retaliated nine seconds later with the last goal of the game at 2:24. Jason Hansen won the face-off at centre ice to Scott Hentig who carried carried the puck deep into the right corner, then passed to Brandon Ovenden in the slot for a snap shot to give Brandon his hat-trick. Final score Orono 8 and Lakefield 3,, Scott Hail and Chad Puk in net gave their usual outstanding performances performances in stopping several close chances. Although not mentioned on the scoring, Neil Haines and Mike Schoep on defense broke up rushes and fed the forwards for good opportunities, While Cameron Tomkins and Adam Wallace worked worked very hard on the forward line. On Monday, December 21st, the Orono Kinsmen Peewees took part in a friendly local match with the Orono O.M.H.A. Atoms. Although missing four regular players, the Peewees hoped to do well against their local brother (in some cases, literally) players. Early in the game, the Peewees forced the plày and opened the scoring when Brandon Ovenden dropped the puck to Scott Hartwig on point. Scott's sho( found its way past a crowd in front of the net and gave the Peewees a 1 to 0 lead. This first goal proved to be an all-important marker as the goalies at both ends put on a tremendous display of shut-out hockey from this point on. Chad Puk and Scott Hall in net for the Peewees robbed the Atom forwards forwards on 'several close calls. The forward lines of Dan Walters, Greg Hooper, Adam Wallace, Jason Mercer, Jason Hansen and Scott Hentig were foiled on many good attempts, while Sean McKenzie and Neil Haines on defense set up forward forward rushes and blocked attacks. While the play was somewhat scrambly at times, both teams put on a good show. The Atoms came very close to tying the game, especially in the last few minutes, but the Peewees held on for the win. Teamwork, boys! On Tuesday, December 29th, the Orono Kinsmen Peewees went to Little Britain for a tournament. Their first opponents were a team from Oakwood. It appeared that the Christmas holidays had taken their toll on the boys as Oakwood slid into a'one goal lead just 34 seconds into the garnie. This settled the boys down and they started their own attack. At 8:23 of the first perio,d, Jason Hansen won a face- off in Oakwood's end and dropped the puck to Sean McKenzie on defense. Sean's high shot from the point beat the goalie to tie the game. Orono pressed hard but were unable to break the tie until late in the period. Dan ^Valter carried the puck from 'Orono's end into ' the Oakwood corner and fed a pass to «* Jason Mercer in front of the net for the go-ahead goal at 0:24. The second second period was end-to-end, with chances both ways. At 5:44, Orono got some insurance as Brandon Ovenden set up Greg Hooper for a 3 to 1 lead. This proved to be the end of the scoring for both teams but lots of exciting play and close * calls made it a great game. Final score Orono 3, Oakwood 1. On to the Championship side! Orono's second game was against a team of good-sized boys from Harmony Street in Oshawa and this would be the most exciting game of the tournament to this point. Oshawa started the scoring just 23 seconds into the game, but Orono came back at 7:22 with the tieing goal. Scott Hentig and Mike Schoep combined passes to Jason Hansen and the resulting quick shot put Orono on the board. The rest of the first period and most of the second saW lots of action at both ends, with Nhe goalies arid defense prevailing over the forwards^ in stopping whatever chances occurred. Oshawa scored et" 3:11 but Orono came back at 2:08 when Dan Walters put the puck in the net unassisted. Less than a minute later, at 1:08, Orono went ahead for the first time as Jason Mercer gave a pass to Stephen Shetler and Stephen wasted no time in beating the goalie. From this point on, the Orono boys fought very hard to extend extend their lead and came very close on several occasions by forwards listed as well as Adam Wallace, Mike Schoep and Cameron Tomkins. Scott Hartwig and John Buttigieg on defense helped protect the lead by breaking up rushes and clearing the puck from the Orono zone. The Orono goalies, Chad Puk and Scott Hall robbed Oshawa on breakaways and other chances that seemed sure-fire goals. Oshawa finally cracked the Orono shell and tied the game at 3:56 of the third period but neither team was able to score again in regular time. SUDDEN SUDDEN DEATH OVERTIME! With no goalies! End to end action resulted with lots of near misses as Orono's forwards tried their best and the defense were superb in blocking shots and clearing the puck out of dangerous situations. Unfortunately, Oshawa finally put the puck in the Orono net with 1:27 left in the overtime period to advance advance to the finals and send Orono home early with the final score of Oshawa 4 and Orono 3. The Orono boys were naturally disappointed with this loss but their calibre of play was excellent and the very entertaining game could have gone either way. Good work, boys, keep up the team effort. Next game is a regular schedule match in Millbrook on January 4th. Orono Kinsmen Peewees began 1988 with a trip to Millbrook for a league game on Monday, January 4th. Both teams were flying after the holidays and the parents were treated to a fine scoreless first period. Orono finally opened the scoring at 9:04 of the second period when Dan Walters outfought the Millbrook .defense in their corner, carried the puck in front and backhanded the piick past the goalie. Orono got their second goal when John Buttigieg stopped a clearing pass at the Millbrook blue line, carried the puck into the zone- and fed Greg Hooper a pass in front and Greg's shot found the net at. 5:32. Millbrook scored to close the gap at 4:41 but Orono came back with their third goal with 31 seconds left in the period. In the third period Jason Hansen again got the assist as he combined with Greg Hooper for Greg's second goal at the 9:30 mark. Millbrook got a second goal at 8:18 but Orono never let up and got an insurance goal at 4:48 as Scott Hentig scored on a good set up by Stephen Shetler after a face off in the Millbrook end. Lots. of credit goes to the goaltending duo of Scott Hall and Chad Puk who foiled the opposi tion on many shots.- Also, th- defense of Brandon Ovenden, Schoep and Sean McKenzie, who ' worked well at both ends of the rink, clearing our zone and blocking blocking their. Cameron Tomkins and Jason -Mercer on forward both played well and both just missed adding adding to the team goal total. Keep up the teamword, boys, you're looking great. Final score Orono 5 and Millbrook 2. The team wishes to express their condolences to Adam Wallace and his family on their recent family loss. On Friday, January 8th, the Orono Kinsmen Peewees played the Lakefield White team. Orono got on the sçoresheet quickly, just 59 seconds into the first period.
