Reporter: Joanna VanDyke Letter outlines Courtice problems Extend Courtice garbage collection area Town council on Monday extended extended the garbage collection area in Courtice beyond the boundaries of the Courtice Urban area. The move by council came following considerable discussion and a request request from a BFI representative that such action be taken. The BFI representative pointed out that their contract only included the Urban area of Courtice as defined defined by by-law but that ÿiis left out some 100 residences which they would drive by in garbage collecting in the Urban area. Council was asked to support the squaring off of the boundaries which would allow for a better operation of garbage pick-up and wlrch the representative was most sensible. He spoke of present imaginary imaginary boundary lines that were difficult to define. BFI starts their operation in the Courtice area on November 17th. Co une. Stapleton said it was a good motion but that as now they were changing the boundaries the contract should now go out for re- tendering. He said either that or leave it alone. "The Town should not be against free enterprise", he said. Counc. Cowman brought up the matter of an unit charge rather than costs of collection being collected through the mill rate and property assessment. She said there are many $250,000 homes in the Courtice area and these owners would pay a sizeable amount for their garbage garbage collection compared lo those with a home ai less assessed value. The issue of a single unit price compared to use of the mill rate is to be further discussed by council following a report on this issue from the treasurer. A letter from the Courtice and- Area Community Association has been referred to the Town of Newcastle Chief Administrative Officer, Officer, Larry Kotseff, for answers sought by the association on behalf of the residents. The letter outlines several concerns concerns and states that the overall absence of services are most apparent. apparent. Of special concerns was garbage pick-up and fire fighting facilities to the area. The letter states that many seek municipal garbage collection which is felt to be a service provided by the municipality. It also calls for the Town to set a unit rate rather than on a rate commensurate with the assessed value of the individual homes. The letter calls for more funding for fire protection so that an adequate adequate fire coverage could be provided. provided. • The group also wants to know what concrete steps are being taken regarding the water problem in. Courtice. The letter stated the responsibility rested with the municipality, the region and the developers in the area. The president of the association said they commended the library needs study and they encouraged an effective dialogue between the Library Board and the Town council. council.
