Last Sunday I visited a marsh surrounded on three sides by a housing development and on the fourth by Lake Ontario. A stream bordered by osier, scrub willow, burr oak and cedar feeds the marsh. There is grass meadow and a mature woodlot along its borders. That morning without, any special effort, just pausing to listen and watch, I saw a great deal of activity. In the scrub growth at the edge of the meadow a bunch of red-winged blackbird fledglings carried on, noisy but almost invisible in the centre of some willow scrub. In a hole in an oak snag by the cattails, downy woodpeckers were coming and going with food. From the osiers came the witchity-witchity- whichity of the common yellowthroat but I never did find him. Tree swallows swooped and skimmed over the marsh. A wild burst of melody which trailed off as though the singer had forgotten the notes turned out to be coming from a catbird "deep in the wildgrape tangle. In the swamp itself one log was upholstered with painted turtles, the size of my hand, heads raised to WELL WATER PROBLEMS? Two mute swans hovered with protective menace • close to their cygnets, A marsh wren rattled his song, invisible in the reeds. At the baver lodge fresh-cut poplar indicated indicated residents. Over the swaying marsh grasses goldfinches dipped. This marsh was saved from being drained and filled as part of a subdivision subdivision by the efforts of the local citizens. Now the area is a.source of pleasure for walkers, runners, amateur naturalists and saunterers. The injunction at the entrance to the marsh reads, "Take only pictures, pictures, leave only footprints, kill only only time." In May I visited another sort of wetland, a bog, a landscape so old and removed from the world that it was an enchanted place. Guided by a botanist who knew the area, we crackled through shoulder-high snake grass, past a clump of majestic majestic tulip trees, until we reached the soft peaty-moss floor of the bog proper. This floor bloomed with starflowers, bunchberry, clintonia, two-flowered Solomon's seal, tufted loosestrife and purple avens. But the real purpose of the visit when we found them brought us; all to a stumbling open-mouthed halt, Banks of giant yellow lady's-slippers nodded, perfect golden globes in the half-shade. This place, within sound of a crowded Lake Erie beach, is protected protected within a provincial park. Two hundred miles north of the Great Lakes, I visited another marsh at the shallow end of a bay on a northern lake. I went by kayak so that I could move over less than a foot of water silently as the loon or mink. Green frogs plonked around me and a great blue rose with a hoarse complaining croak. A kingfisher followed me rattling harshly. harshly. Again the common yellowthroat, never far from water, sang in the brushy undergrowth. With emphatic and untiring optimism, optimism, the ovenbird called "teacher, teacher, teacher". Where?.- the mature mixed forest bordered the marsh I heard the loud cry and - drumming of the pileated woodpecker, haunting call of the whitethroat and the honk of the red-breasted nuthatch. While I floated quietly two loons fished nonchalantly not more than twenty twenty feet from me, divided so smoothly they scarcely made a ripple. ripple. The swelling buds of the yellow pond lilies were just ready to burst. Later on, the horned bladderwort, a carniverous plant growing partly submerged near the muddy bank, would glow yellow as pats of melting butter against the dark marsh water. Ironically this marsh, despite its apparent isolation, may not be as fortunate as either of the other wetlands I visited. The bay has been subdivided into cottage lots. Loons and herons no longer nest on the islands in the marsh. And I suppose that someone will have the bright idea of filling the swamp to get one more lot to sell. Drainage of wetlands in Ontario began as early as 1860. Millions of acres have gone for good and each year many more acres are lost. Aside from their obvious value as a home for amphibians, wildfowl, fish, and fur-bearing animals, they also act as water purjfiers and regulators of water levels. WE ' NEED WETLANDS! fhe Government Government of Ontario, partly as a result of the work of the F.O.N., finally recognized the importance oPsaving as much as possible of, what is left by introducing, in the latest.budget. Phone the Times with your News Events 983-5301 a measure which makes wetlands eligible for a 100Vo property tax rebate.
