Turn first sod for new bank Oddfellow s Lodge celebrates it's Seventy-fifth Anniversary The 75th Anniversary of the founding of the Oro'io Oddfellows Lodge, No. 436, was celebrated last Wednesday evening in the Oddfellows Oddfellows Hall. Ninety Oddfellows, Rebekahs and honoured guests topk part in the activities of the evening. The ladies of the U.C.W. of Shiloh United Church catered to a delicious banquet which was enjoyed enjoyed by all. Head table guests were Past Grand master Harry Wade and his wife, Sister Mable; Past Grand Master Gleen Wanamaker and his wife, Sister Marjorie; District Deputy Grand master Clarence Ash and his wife. Verna; Past District deputy Grand Master Gordon Watson, Watson, master ot ceremonies and his wife, ' Sister Velma and Noble Grand of the Orono Lodge, Anthony Anthony Wood and his wife. Following the banquet those present present retired the lodge, room being entertained with toe-tapping music by the Mellow-Tones and a recitation recitation by Bro. Robert Chafers which was first given by Bro. Bob at the 25th anniversary of the Lodge in 1937. Greetings were extended by officers officers of Grand Lodge who also paid tribute to the work carried out by the local lodge over the past seventy-five years. Bro. Gordon Watson also presented some of the highlights of the lodge over the past years. Some two hundred and fifty grade eight and grade ten female students representing schools from across the local Board of Education area were told last Friday to "Take off the blinders" by the keynote speaker at a career awareness day held in the Orono United Church. The Career Awareness Day was billed as Changing Times -Changing Lives and was sponsored by the Northumberland and Newcastle Status of Women Committee and financed by the local Board of Education. Each school in the area having grade eight and ten students was in vited to send representatives to the seminar which was held for the purpose purpose to provide information about a variety of non-traditional- jobs available to young women. In speaking with Grant Yeo, Coordinator Coordinator of Curriculum for the Northumberland and Newcastle Board, who attended the meeting as an observer, said the seminar was very popular, extremely worthwhile and that there has been positive comments from those who attended. attended. Two workshop sessions were held in the morning which related to women in a variety of trades and professions. Clarke students place well in math contests Clarke High School students have placed well in recent Canadian Math competitions sponsored by the University of Waterloo. Clarke fielded a team of U students in the Pascal competitioi for Grade Nine students who com peted against a record number of 24,067 students from across Cariada. The top three Clarke students were Stacey Klages, Brian Mereweather and Todd Gray. Klages and Mereweather were in the top twenty-five percent of all students with their results. Of the total number of students who competed seven had perfect Happenings . scores. In 'the Cayley contest for Grade 10 where 18,712 students were in competition Clarke hÿ a contingent contingent of 11 students. Ian Vanderschere placed within the top 3 percent for the contest while Greg Donald placed in the top 15 percent and Mjke Tait in the top 20 percent. The Grade 10 team from Clarke placed ninth out of thirty schools in the district. Pascal Contest '.
