1. Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, March 4, 1987-3 card, no cheques. I had the credit card so there would be no problem. dut came the two bills, one for $35.00 and one for $308.00. Out came the VISA. You can pay the $35.00 on your VISA but the $308.00 will have to be cash as it goes to another company company and we cannot accepted VISA for that portion of the bill. My question was, "Why can't you take the total amount of $343.00 by using the VISA and then pay the other company, of which you deal with all the .time, by whatever means you wish?" I was told, "That's impossible it will have to be cash". I then tried that blank cheque I always carry. After all the compâny had accepted the down payment for the new car by cheque and then a final payment of over $9,000 also by cheque. If my uncertified cheque was good then it should be good now. It didn't' work and I still didn't have the keys to make my trip home. It then dawned on me that I had emptied the till before leaving the office and if my guardian angel was still about perhaps, just perhaps, there was enough for the $308.00. The tension was building as I counted out the bills and to be truthful I was past the stage of getting getting a chuckle oiit of this whole thing. It was so ridiculous. She's still with me however . . . the count ended at $311.00. Move continues to buy Port Hope theatre Although a week ago most felt a bid to purchase the Capitol Theatre in Port Hope was dead new life in ■ the bid has been injected. There is an idea of establishing a community theatre and a clause in the sale agreement that first-run movies could not be shown by the purchaser has been lifted. The Ganaraska Region Conservation Conservation authority held their annual meeting in Port Hope last Thursday when a review of the past year was presented along the election of officers officers and the setting of the 1987 budget. Pictured above are Frank Stapleton elected vice-chairman, Pauline Storks, retiring Provincial appointment and past vice- chairman of the Authority, Gerry Houston, elected chairman, Diane Harare, Newcastle appointment and Klaas Schoenmaker, recently appointed to the Athority by the Province. Houstoh told the annual meeting that the Authroity had completed the major project of channelization in Port Hope and an erosion project in Cobourg. The Authority had planted close'to 40,000* trees under the Conservation Service program on private lands and as well completed completed stream bank stabilization using using 560 tonnes of rock. The residential program at the Forest Centre had been booked solidly throughout the past year. Revenue from timber and wood products from the forest rêaçhed $40,000 during the past Ministry A Cashless Society . . or is it. . . We often hear that the World is fast entering what has been called a cashless society and that most per-*' . sonal financial transactions are now carried out with the use of the plastic credit card. We are not too sure this is really the case yet for as we found out on two occasions some three weeks ago plastic failed us. The fact is we • should have been stuffing our pockets with green bills. - The fact is I don't do much shopping shopping as. this is left up to Donna. The only financial payments I do look after are those associated with the Orono Times where over the years, we have established credit and a cheque at the end of the month has always been accepted as payment without question. * I can understand the reluctance for businesses to take a cheque from unknown customers and as a result some years ago I secured a VISA card just to be on the safe side. I use it very sparingly and just as a convenience at certain times. I do howèver still carry a blank cheque when a cheque may be better better than nothing. It was three Weeks ago that 1 had my first experience in this so called cashless or plastic era. I travelled to Sears in the Oshawa Centre for the purchase of five tickets for Cats where Ticketron has an outlet. There was little difficulty in gaining gaining what I felt were good seats but before the operator activated the marine for the purchase she asked "v îat be cash or Sears credit card' '. "No, I was going to pay by forest year. This was offset with maintenance fees to the Ministry of $65,000. Municipal levies as set at the annual annual meeting will see increases ranging ranging from one.to five percent over the range of the eight participating municipalities. The Authority deficit has been reduced to $45,000. PINEWIND KENNELS REG'D BOARDING MODERN • HEATED GROOMING 5 Minutes East of 35/115 ALL BREEDS CLEAN (416)797-2431 CORNISH 8» VISA". "We don't accept VISA, only cash or the Sears' card." I thought so much for VISA and so much for this cashless society. It meant another trip to Ticketron with my pocket stuffed with bills and as I think back I should have made it the amount of over two hundred dollars all in one dollar bills. In the meantime Donna hit a snow bank (I wonder if I should tell this) snapped off Don Lycett's mail box and ended nose down in the ditch on Main Street' north. This put a crease down the side of her car which would require body work repair. ■ As it 'was time to have the car undercoated we made arrangements with Ontario Hyundai for both the undercoating and to get an estimate for the body repair which they \yould look after through a body centre with whom they do business. The car was taken over and an estimate of $308.00 given for .the body repair. I was also to pay $35.00 for washing the underside of the car before undercoating. Total bill $343.00. - I felt fortunate to get out of the whole thing for that amount of money and said go ahead. Then the day came to pick up the car and pay the bill. I made arrangements arrangements to go to Oshawa with Janette after work as she returned home and was dropped off at Hyundia. Janette took off to downtown Oshawa to do some shopping. The repair appears an excellent job so its to the office to pay the bill and be on my way home. I was for- warned in this case by Hyundia that it would be either cash or credit :onl,i * s * 'il * ; » « turns family pack pOrkfresh J 5 ^ chops-|.79 from the tropics bana __ nas "39 Maxwe HouseQ coffee9 roun ij fell selected rll varieties .99 369 g vacuum pak Freshly sliced I young beef Jivsr /K93.50 Fruit & Fibre selected varieties. plain spaghetti SclUCGno Catelli yy stalks productofU S A.
