4> Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 5, 1983 Orono Tykes Win "Novice B" Consolation Championship The combined Orono Tyke Teams and parents spent an enjoyable Monday, December 27,1982 at the Little Little Britain Hockey Tournament. Tournament. Our first game gave Peterborough Peterborough a 9-0 victory. Orono Tykes gave their all in skating and puck handling but could not get past this Peterborough Peterborough team. Our second game saw Orono defeat Millbrook 4-0. This Millbrook team which saw two defeats by both Orono Tykes teams in exhibition exhibition games earlier in the season showed great im provement in their hockey skills. Orono goals scored by Aaron Staples 1, Cameron Tompkins 1, Tim Hallowell 1, Stephen Stadilman 1. Assists by Stephen Shetler 1, Cameron Tompkins 1. Shutout Shutout game for goalie John Buttigeig. Our third game gave Orono the Consolation Championship by defeating Lindsay 5-3. These Orono boys put their best into this game by taking the lead in the first period and not looking back. Lindsay scored 2 goals in' the second and 1 goal in the third period. But these Orono boys never let Lindsay get ahead of them with 2 goals in the first, 2 in the second second and 1 in the third. Orono goals by Stephen Stadilman 2, Neil Haines 1, Brian Good 1. This Consolation Trophy was wéll earned by these Orono Tykes, as most of these players are first year boys. This was their first Tournament that they played in together as a combined team. As well as being a novice "B" Tournament. Newcastle Newcastle dominated the first period as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Pearce and Brady. In the second period Jade Gardens started to come on as Jim Connell narrowed the score to 2-1 assisted by Ron Farrow and Bob Westhauser. Jim Souch tied the score at 2-2 on a goal assisted by Ray Melville and John Cartwright. The third period went scoreless as the goaltenders dominated the action as both Bob Bourne : for Orono and Dave Waddell for Newcastle played excellent excellent games. Stutt Bantams win Uxbridge tournie On Dec. 20th Orono travelled to Newcastle. Although Orono tried hard, they were unable to'score until until the 3rd period. Jim Wood scored, assisted by Keith Vey, Then Peter Armstrong put one in assisted by Jim Wood and Eric Dreslinski. It was not enough, however, and the game ended in a 4-2 win for Newcastle. On Dec. 22nd, Orono finally broke their recent losing losing streak with a 3-3 tie in Man vers. Paul Henry scored the first goal unassisted. Then Richie Dupe put one in on a pass from Peter Armstrong. Armstrong. Paul Henry scored his second of the game assisted by itichie Dupe. On Dec. 27, Orono travelled travelled ta Uxbridge for a tournament tournament where they won 3 well- played .games to take the championship trophy. They defeated Maple 2-1 in the first game, tiavid La France scored the first goal on a pass 'from Jim Wood. Then David Little from Jim Wood and David La France. In the second second game Orono bombed JSunderland 6-0. Darren Lewis scored the first goal of the first period assisted by Paul Henry. Jim Wood scored on a pass from Brad Roberts. In the second period Keith Vey scored unassisted. In the 3rd period Darren Lewis scored his second of the game on a pass from Scott McCullough and Brad Roberts. They came right back to get a "Hat Trick" assisted by David La France and Jim Wood. Jim also scored the last goal of the game assisted by Paul Henry and David La France. In the 3rd game Orono beat Maple once more 6-2. The goals were all scored in the 3rd period. Paul Henry got a "Hat Trick" with singles going going to Richie Dupe, Peter Armstrong and Keith Vey. Getting the assists were: Richie Dupe 2, Jim Wood 1, Shawn Bailey 2, Allan Hall 1, Keith Vey 2, David Little 2, and David La France 1. On Dec. 29th Orono travelled to Newcastle for their 2nd tournament of the holidays. Their first game was against Glen Stewart (Continued page 5) M&H PeeWees second in Colbourne tournie ' On Tuesday, Dec. 28,1982 the. Matthews and Hill 'O.M.H.A. Peewees travelled to Colbome to participate in a tournament with teams from Colbome, Brighton, Trenton, Tweed, Frankford, Stirling and Peterborough. ,Orono 8 Trenton 1 The first game saw the local boys come up against a team from Trenton, the first period saw the Orono team come out flying with Stuart Irwin 'opening the scoring after only 0:24 seconds with assists going to Brian Hill and Kevin Mumford. With 5:05 left in the period Stuart can® up with his second to up the score to 2-0 with Brian Hill assisting. Before the period ended David Bailey put Orono ahead 3-0 with assists going to Kevin Mumford and Brian Hill. The second period saw the local boys keep on the pressure and outscore the Trenton Boys by a 4-1 count to end the second period 7-1 in favour of Orono. Scoring for Orono were: Brian Hill and Stuart Irwin with two each, with assists going to , Kevin Mumford, Stuart Irwin, Irwin, Patrick Woods, and Brian Hill. The third period saw Orono come up with the only goal of the period by Brian Hill with assists going to Stuart Irwin and Kevin Mumford as they coasted to a 8-1 victory. Orono 2 Peterborough 1 The second game saw Orono come up against Peterborough whom they had lost to 6-4 in an Exhibition Exhibition game at the start of the season. This game turned into one of the best end to end action games of the Totimament with both teams going all out with excellent goaltending at both ends. The first period saw Orono draw first blood as Keyin Mumford put one high over the Peterborough goalie assisted by Stuart Irwin. Irwin. The second period saw Peterborough tie the score at 1-1 on a goal by Curt Adamson. Adamson. In the third period both teams played wide open end to end action packed hockey only to be stopped cold at both ends by some excellent goaltending. Finally, with 1:42 left in the game Kevin Mumford came up with his second of '«the game unassisted on a shot from the corner hitting the Peterborough Peterborough player in the back an reflecting into the goal. Final score Orono - 2 and Peter borough 1, putting Orono into into the Championship game against Frankford. Orono 1 Frankford 2 The final game for the championship saw another excellent exciting game of end to end hockey. The first period saw Frankford open up the scoring scoring after only 0:25 seconds as . the'local boys were caught flat footed. Although the local boys had numerous scoring chances it wasn't until until there were only 0:53 seconds seconds left in the second period that Stuart Irwin tied the game at 1-1, assisted by Brian Hill and Kevin Mumford. Mumford. The third period saw both teams have their chances to win the game. Finally, with 1:31 left in the'game P. Lytle put in the winner for Frankford unassisted. The local boys are to congratulated congratulated on their excellent effort and team work. Each boy received runners up medallion.
