SAM AT QUEEN'S PARK PENSIONS CONCERN FOR QUEEN'S PARK You rarely think of pen- . sions and retirement funds until you are near retirement age. Many of us put a little aside in the bank for the future, but rely on public pension plans and support for seniors programs to sup- , port us after we retire from work. Recently there have been jome disturbing signs about the ability of the Canada Pension Plan, and other Government pensions, to meet their commitments. It appears that these pension programs are running out of money. What has caused this situation situation is people. The "Baby Boom" generation is getting older. As -this generation ages, more people will Be on these pension plans than paying paying into them. As a result of shifts in population, there will soon be too many senior citizens requiring requiring the Canada Pension Plan, and other plans, and not enough funds set aside to serve them all. The Ontario Government has been concerned about this problem for some time. The Treasurer has requested economists to write .up projections projections and discussion papers to set the problem into perspective and provide a groundwork for action. The reports of the economists show that action is necessary soon, if the , Canada Pension Plan is to survive. The Premier has pro dded Federal authorities to respond to head off a coming crisis. In April, Ontario met with the Federal Government, and the leaders of the other provinces, provinces, at the National Pensions Pensions Conference held in Ottawa. Ottawa. The meeting helped the Provinces and the Federal Government co-ordinate action action in finding solutions to the pensions crisis. In Ontario, the Report of the Royal Commission on Pensions Policy has provided a basis for discussion and action. action. The Report recommends recommends fundamental reforms must occur in private sector pensions in order to save Canada's Senior Citizen pension pension system. The Premier has appointed members of all parties to the Select Committee op Pensions. Pensions. The committee will go over the report and recommendations recommendations of the, Royal Commission on Pensions Policy and then make recom- njendaiions .of its own for action action by the Legislature. I am pleased to have the privilege to sit on the Select Committee on Pensions. The work* of this committee will help strengthen one of the major pillars of Welfare Legislation in our Province. In my, next column I will discuss in greater detail the Report of the Royal Commission Commission on Pensions Policy in Ontario and the work of the Select Committee on Pensions. Pensions. In closing, I'd like to remind remind . readers of the P.lay MOSES being performed at Newcastle United Church, in Newcastle, August 13 through 15, at 8:0(j p.m. The play is highly recommended and a real treat for people looking for something to do these long summer evenings.
