Jack recalls "first working in the south plant with some other fifteen workers which numbers have now swelled into into the hundreds. Following this event the fair will resume on Thursday, Thursday, September 10th and continue until and through Sunday, September 13th. This is a departure from the past two years when the tractor pull was held in conjunction conjunction with the rest of the fair. The event on Monday, September 7th will get underway underway at 11:00 a.m. and continue continue to its conclusion in the afternoon. There are eight classes included included in the pull this year with tractors 5,000 to 7,000 lbs., 7,000 to 9,000 lbs., 9.000 to 11,000 lbs., 11,000 to 13,000 lbs., 13,000 to 15.000 lbs. as well as Modified Trucks at 6500 lbs., Modified Tractors at 6,000 lbs., and Highway tractors. Colts win Newcastle Mosquito tournie at Newcastle Village On Saturday, July 25, the Village of Newcastle Chamber of Commerce sponsored sponsored a soccer toürnament for house league Mosquito Teams. Teams invoked were Port Perry Star Astros, Port Perry Sipco Oilers, Orono and Newcastle Town Sport Colts. The tournament was a round robin affair with the top two teams at completion of. round robin playing for (continued page 2) ; # To Canada Summer Games Hydro installing additional lights in business section Newcastle Hydro has started the installation of new concrete polls in the business section of Orono both on the west and east side. In speaking with Morfey Watson, Jvlanager, he stated that Hydro is installing seven new concrete polls in the business section. The 'business section will be lighted with seven new 250 high-pressure sodium lights. . These lights will be placed on both the east side and the. west side of the street. At the present time the business sec- 1 tion is lighted with four lower-powered '■ .mercury vapour lights. •'*. The Manager said all wires will be taken off the east side of the street with property on the west side of the street be ing serviced from a new line being constructed on the west side above the present telephone line. The street lights on the east side of the street will be served served by the underground cond- duit which is being installed at the time of the new sidewalks. g , Watson said that . the overhead telephone lines on the west side of the street will be eliminated, when Bell Cànâda installs a new back- lot line. Watson exppets the work to be completed the first week. in August. The new system will give much better lighting in the business section section and as well' improve the appearance of the necessary overhead lines considerably. The Times will resume publication publication on Wednesday, August 12th. MINISTRY APPROVES GANARASKA BUILDING Announcement was made last week by Northumberland Northumberland MP.P. Howard Sheppard that the Minister of Natural Resources had given approval for the construction of an administration and workshop complex for the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority. Previously the proposal was turned down by the Province but after meeting with Sheppard and Sam Gureatz the decisitiri was reversed. Gerry Houston, chairman of the Authority expects tenders to be called early in August with a selection later in the month. Orono Tot lot referred to committee The proposed Orono Tot Lot at the south walkway into the Orono Estates subdivision subdivision was referred to management committee on Monday by council. The proposed project had been recommended from the planning and development committee to council with action action to be taken to proceed with the project. The "planning committee recommendation had suggested suggested that the public works department to prepare specifications for the calling of tendering and report to the public works committee. It also called for the Community Community Services department to undertake such works in developing a Tot Lot parkette with playground equipment. Monies for the project vyere to come from lot levies reserve account and the reserve park fund. When the matter came 1 before council on Monday Counc. Harare wanted to be . assured that the walkway although to tie used for emergency entrance for such as the fire department did not become a thoroughfare for cars and motorcycles, fhe deputy-director of public works stated that there was 1 nothing in the tender bids that would" be as a bearer to keep out all but emergency vehicles. 1 Counc. Woodyard s'aid there appeared to be a lot of confusion over the project. He said,the fire department would not get out of their vehicle on the way to a fire to unlock a chain or gate. He also said that the Ministry of Transporation would be opposed opposed to such an entrance at the Lot 21 location as it was too near the entrance into Orono. Woodyard said he would like to see the whole matter reviewed but would recommend that the lot be cleaned up in the meantime. Counc. Prout said he had to agree "with Counc. Woodyard and further stated that the establishment of a further park in the Town should go to the Master Plan for recreation. Counc. Harare said she could not believe . what she was hearing at this time and 1 said she now understood the frustrations of councillors in the past. She said the report had been before council back as far as 1976 or 1977 and that the most recent report, had been signed by the Director Director of Planning,' Public works and Conihiunity Services. There .was no indication' when the project would corne back to council with council having no meeting during the month of August. Milan Popadich, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. O. Popadich, Orono, will be competing in the Canada Summer Games the forepart of August in both the 110 m. hurdles and in the decathlon. The games are being held in Thunder Bay from August 9th to August 22nd with the track and field events from August 10th to August 15th. Popadich, a student at McMaster's University in Hamilton, h^s been unbeaten in the 110 m, hurdles both in- doors ( ahd outdoors at the intercollegiate intercollegiate levpl this season and was s recently crowned McMaster's male athlete of the year: Not only will Popadich compete in the 110 m. hurdles ' but will also compete in the decathlon, an event including ten events. Thèse events are the 100 m. dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 m.- dash, 110 m. hurdles,-discus,, pole vault, javelin and the 1500 m. dash To this point, Popadich has excelled in the 110 ,m. hurdles but cj° es favour the decathalon. His coach, Sue Summers has been reported to have said that his strength is in the multiple event, the decathalon. Popadich took part in track and field in high school when attending Clarke but held skiing at that time as his big sport. He was also a member of the London West track club and at McMaster has* given added emphasis to his endeavours in track and -field. With the entry of Milan in ' the Canada Summer Games, ' interest "in the Orono community community vyill certainly be high. We wish him well in the competitions competitions and will be watching with interest.
