STILL NEED $236,000 FOR RECREATION CENTRE Estimated costs for the new Cobourg Recreation Centre have risen more than $300,000 in the past eighteen months. The treasurer for the building fund points out that $314,000 has been raised through cash and donations. Council has given $80,000 and $886,000 is expedted from Wintario and Community Centres. The designation of October 15th to October 20th as Library Week throughout the Province and including the Town of Newcastle focuses ih to library services being offered on a provincial basis as well as on a community basis. Excellent library services services are available in the Village of Orono ,and have. been available since thé year 1888. The Clarke Public Library operates under the Newcastle Library Board and is housed in a spacious and interesting • old home at the corner of Centre and Church Street. The library with a book selection of ll.OOQ volumes offers reading for all age groups even to pre-schoolers and meets the tastes of most readers from fiction to biographies, biographies, sciences, art, history, history, travel, social sciences, religion, etc., etc. Through Clarke Library it is also possible to get the loan of special books through what is knojvn as Interlibrary Loan. The local .library has had somewhat of an illustrious history dating back to 1888 when the first library of 34 books was formed under the Mechanics' Institutes. Up until 1926 the library moved In September of 1970 the library, due to a generous bequest of almost $20,000 from a former resident of the Orono area, Miss Lena Ren- wick, officially opened at its present location. Here the library lias flourished and expanded its services for those in thé community. It now operates under the Town of Newcastle which came about-in 1974 with the creation of the Region of Durham. Further information on Orono tool shed The Planning Committee of the Town of Newcastle again postponed a decision on the matter of a special rezonipg of lands which would allow the existance of a tool shed 10 feet from tjhe Orono Creek in the Village,of Orono. A plea was made to the committee by legal counsti for Mr. Leo Watson of Orono asking that the , committee grant the rezonirig application. The tool shed was constructed constructed on the bank of the stream in the' flood plain without a building permit. The Committee of Adjust ment has turned down an application for a minor variance variance to allow the shed to remain and as well the , Supreme Court of Ontario has issued a mandatory injunct- ' ion that the building be removed or relocated. •, The Planning Director has recommended that. 'the fe- zoning application be turned down., On Monday legal counsel for Watson said that only the ' Ganaraska Conservation"' Authority and the Ministry of Natural Resources objected to the tool shed within ten feet of the stream. He said that Mr. Watson proposes to erect a concrete wall to elevate erosion which he said was the main thrust of the two bodies. It was also pointed but that neighbours had supported the shed location through a peti- ' tion. The building, it was pointed out, is built and substantial. Counc. The library about this time moved to the basement of the Orono Town Hall but soon outgrew the space.
