They will be working on Ontario farms as junior agriculturists. agriculturists. The Junior Agriculturist Program, sponsored by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Agriculture and Food, is part of the Ontario Government's Experience Experience '79 program. During the 9-week program which begins June 18th, the students will live and work on selected farms across the Province. More than 1,000 students have already applied for the Program Program this summer. Much of the credit for the Program's success must be given to the farmers who volunteer to be host farmers and to the enthusiastic students. Many farmers have volunteered to be hosts for the Program year after year and many find it rewarding to share their experience with young people who have a keen interest in Agriculture. The Program offers urban young people - age 16 and 17 - a valuable insight into Ontario Ontario Agriculture. In some cases this experience has encouraged junior agriculturists agriculturists to attend Agricultural College. Any commercial farmer farmer can apply to be a host farmer for the Program. Host farmers are required to supply room and board and pay $6.00 per day to the student. The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food also pays $6.00 per day to the student. Farmers interested in becoming host farmers should Contact the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food in Bowmanville at 623-3348 before May 15th to get further information oh the Program. "Green Survival" theme at Orono meet Schedu le cha nges for Orono Fair Well over one hundred people enjoyed the first hobby and craft show, sponsored by the Orono, Horticultural Society Society last Thursday evening. The regular business period was followed by musical selections, by Jessica Mos- tert, on the piano and Charlie Taylor with both mouth organ and the auto harp. Our Charlie responded to various requests for the ever popular, "How Great Thou Art", on the auto harp, and an appreciative audience responded responded with a steady hum-a- long. We are so proud of our Music dept, here in the Orono society, as Jessica is one of our Jr. Gardeners and a very talented young lady. Isabelle Challice introduced introduced our guest speaker for the evening, Mr. Robert Cheesman, of "Landscape Ontario". Our speaker gave a brief outline of what "Green Survival" Survival" means to us all, with the heading, "A series of ■ small steps, we can all take to improve not only our country, but ouc very own way of life," also pictures and talk on "Arbor Day". The; gifts of nature you add to your surroundings help replenish, refresh and cleanse the air. We need about 35 lbs. of oxygen every day, and this comes from green, growing plants on land and vegetation in the sea. Not only that, plants are natures own dust trap. Their leaf surface catch a steady flow of filth from the air, and hold it until the rain washes it away, back into the earth. Mr. Cheesman brought several several educational films and these were much enjoyed by all. Free literature and "Green Survival" buttons were handed out to all present and Thelma Vagg graciously thanked Mr. Cheesman for giving us a most thought provoking subject. This part of the meeting closed and everyone enjoyed the large display of all the various crafts, etc. With over 50 exhibitors and over 200 entries of everything from quilts, rugs, tablecloths, macramé, macramé, crocheting, toys, purses, purses, stationary and even a very ' beautifully decorated "Welcome Spring" cake done by Mrs. Cheryl Saunders of the Orono Estates. This lovely cake was later presented to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Tink, of Hampton. Mr. Tink is retiring in June, as our district director. A delicious lunch closed a very successful evening.
