f Orono Weekly Times» Wednesday, April 25th. 1979-9 Outlines restoration Oak Ridges Moraine The Canadian Institute of Foresters, Eastern Ontario District held their annual meeting at the Ganaraska Forest Centre on Saturday along with a tour of the fish ladder operation on the Ganaraska Ganaraska River in Port Hope. An interesting feature of the meeting was a review of the land restoration program carried out on the Oak Ridge Moraine, north in the former Township of Clarke and the Township of Hope as well as ih the north of Northumberland Northumberland County. Through the use of slides with commentary Bob Beecher Beecher of the District Office of the Ministry of Natural Resources Resources in Lindsay reviewed the happenings in the Oak Ridges Moraine over the past fifty years. Beecher showed slides of the denuded lands following an attempt at farming the Oak Ridges Moraine. These slides provided evidence of wind and water erosion of the land. A couple of slides sho.wed large white pine stumps well above the land level which had eroded from around the stumps to a depth of even two feet. The land at this point was barren with deep eroded gulches appearing. appearing. Beecher spoke of the first attempts to reclaim the land with the planting of trees in the 1920s by the Durham County. These forested lands in the north of the former Township of Clarke, just east of Highway 115 are now producing pulpwood, - poles and not in the too distant future logs for lumber. Some 1400 acres in Durham was replanted by the county and in Northumberland such - operations involved almost 5000 acres. In 1946 the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority, Authority, one of the first, was formed and a report suggesting suggesting 20,000 acres be purchased in the Oak Ridges Moraine was accepted and a program of land purchases was undertaken. undertaken. To this point some 10,500 acres is now under the ownership of the Conservation Conservation Authority and being managed for forestry production production and some recreation by the District Office in Lindsay of the Ministry of Natural Resources. Beecher pointed out that the purchase of land and the reclaiming program was instituted instituted as a means to retard flooding in Port Hope, and to stop erosion and to make better use of the land. He said the planting of trees in the Moraine area, Was in his opinion not a complete answer to stopping flooding in Port Hope but did feel that it was part of the answer. Aerial slides of the forest area did provide a different picture from that of fifty years ago. Beecher, also a biologist, said that the tree planting program was also providing at this time the basis on which to develop better habitat for fish especially in the Wilmot Creek. Through his slides he outlined work being carried out by the Ministry in ■developing better habitat on , the Wilmot and said fish were 1 returning in 1 ever increasing numbers to use the Wilmot for spawning. He said they had found that natural fish production was much superior to artificial production and planting He said there was a relationship between inverterbrates in the stream to that of trout population. Beecher also spoke of the destruction of spawning beds through silting and the need to keep the temperature of the waters suitable for trout habitat. In speaking to the Foresters present he said there was a direct relationship between the planting of trees and the development of habitat for wildlife. Bob Penwell, head of the forestry division of the District, outlined recent activities activities as to forest management management in the Ganaraska Forest and the Northumberland Forest. Forest. Penwell pointed out that the Ministry was undertaking stand conversions in such as Jack and Scotch pine plantations plantations bringing in the more suitable red pine. He also outlined procedures in low- grade hardwood stands where they were being managed to promote the natural return of white pine. Penwell touched on the fuelwood cutting program which was a management program to improve the quality hardwood stands wtihin the Forest. The twenty-year forest management management program was outlined to those present. Charles Grey, District Manager, Manager, also spoke to the meeting and said we must not forget the results of poor land management. He said that à close view must be continued as to aggregate extraction so that the water resource in the Oak Ridges Mohaine is not destroyed. He said the moraine moraine was a source of aggregate aggregate which could well be in great demand in the future.
