It was a time to Recall the beginning of the . Union back to 1954 and to expound its growth during the 25 year period. It was also a time to cut and enjoy the birthday cake and to look with optimism to the* future. OFFICIAL OPENING OF ARENA The official opening of the Orono arena and ' Community Centre will be held this Saturday evening with ribbon cutting sharp at 7 : 30 p.m. Following the opening there will be figure skating, a hockey game with the Orono Orphans as well as a dance and get-together in the Community Room. HONOUR FORMER OWNER . Last week Lynn and Lois Brown of Ôrono provided a testimonial dinner in Port Hope for Jack Sylvester from whom Lynn Brown recently purchased the John L. Sylvester Ltd. business. Jack was appropriately presented with the companies first transit with gleeming brass and -shiny cherrywood base. , WINTER CONDITION RETURN Following a snow storm late last week winter conditions returned over the week-end and although very little snow fell in Orono it was only a few minutes drive to the snow belt in the north. Excellent skiing conditions existed in the Ganaraska Forest. GIVE APPROVAL FOR THIRD PHASE OF PLAZA The-Town of Newcastle council on Monday gave approval for the development of .the third phase of the, Bowmanville Mall which will include'the inclusion of a junior department e. The second phase of the development including two Vmemas is expected to be completed this year.- District Credit Union cut the twenty-fifth anniversary cake risen to almost $400,000 with operating costs held to 4.99 percent. The past year noted the greatest increase in assets. This increase amounted to $96,000 to a total asset position of $398,510.83. Net income for the year amounted to $19,585. Mr. William R. Kean, president, referred to the steady climb of the Orono and District Credit Union which he said was second to none fo Credit Unions of similar size and scope. He paid tribute to at the annual meeting on Friday evening. Mrs. Werry and Mrs: Dorothy Perfect for their outstanding performance of duty and spoke words ôf praise for the work of Robert Hancock and Anugst Loueks. • The annual meeting gave their approval to an 8V4 percent divident as well as an interest rebate of 4 percent. They also approved a sum of $550.00 to the reserve fund of the Credit Union. It was also noted that an interest rate of nine percent had been since November 1,1978. (Continued page 2) Petition against recreation centre in Orono area A petition was presented to council on Monday by Counc. Cowman in which opposition was expressed to the proposed proposed rezoning of agricultural lands east of,' Orono to recreational lands to allow the construction of a Japanese Japanese Recreational Centre. The petition was referred to the Planning Department. The petition stated that the proposed rezoning was not in the best interests of the community listing some five points. It was pointed out that a large amount of funds will have to be spent on improving the unimproved road to the centre and that the fifth and sixth line of Clarke would have to be upgraded to carry extra traffic at the expense of local taxpayers. It was also suggested that the darning of Stolker Creek would lower the water table down stream affecting local farming operations., The petition petition also noted that taking 272 acres but of agricultural uses was a considerable depletion of farm land and it witnessed an urban pressure on the community. 1 The petition also noted the existance of recreational lands and facilities within the community- which were, ade-, quate at the'present time.
