No firm U.S. market 3 Killed for Ontario Hydro Members of the Planning and Development committee for the Town of Newcastle were told on Monday that Ontario Hydro could not at this time obtain a firm commitment from any state in the U.S. to purchase hydro electric power. The comment wa*s made by John McCredie, Ontario Hydro project manager, manager, when addressing the committee as to the progress of the Darlington Nuclear plarit, McCredie • said the U.S. were in no, more of a position to commit themselves to a long-term agreement to. purchase purchase electric power than was# Canada. WANT UPGRADING OF TELEPHONE SERVICE PRIOR TO ANY RATE INCREASE TO ORONO CUSTOMERS A petition from the Orono business section will be delivered to a hearing on Thursday being, conducted by the Ontario Telephone Service Commission in Toronto Concerning a 9.3 per cent increase in telephone service charges to Orono customers. The local petition speaks of a deplorable telephone service,in this area. The petition objects to any telephone rate increase until such time as the service in Orono is substantially up-graded and the petition considers that to the contrary a lowering of rates for the present service is indicated. The Orono petition, signed by most businessmen, endorses the petition of „the local Orono Telephone Ratepayer's Association who from all reports will be seeking an extension of the calling area to be covered by the Orono exchange. It has been reported that the Ratepayer's Association is seeking to have the calling area extended to Bowmanville . and Oshawa with similar rates being charged in those areas. • There will also be an attempt to have the hearing postponed and recalled to be held in Orono. The Association is reported to be armed with signed statements from some ■ "00 customers in the .Orono exchange. ' x,_-- A list of nineteen objections is ajso to be presented to the Commission. Three persons were killed over the week-end in unrelated unrelated accidents in the area. Two died frpm highway accidents while the third was a victim of a snowmobile accident. A 46 year old Oshawa man, and a former resident of the Orono area, Nicholas Victor Shewchuk was killed while walking south of Highway 115 about 8 p.m. Friday evening. The accident happened north of thç Fifth Wheel restaurant. He was struck from behind by a car driven by Charles E. Gray, 43, of Orono, Shewchuk was pronounced dead On arrival'at Memorial Hospital in Bowmanville. Stephen Mandryk, 67, of Toronto was killed about 3:15 p.m. Sunday afternoon. At the time of the accident he was operating his snowmobile on private property east of Highway 35 and north of Pontypool. According to O.P.P. the snowmobile rolled over Mandryk crushing his chest. Edward J. Thompson, 25, of R.R. 1 Hampton died in a collision Saturday evening about 8:30 p.m. on Regional Road 57. He was pronounced dead at Memorial Hospital upon arrival after being freed from his Honda Civic by Newcastle firefighters. No charges were laid against the driver of the second vehicle in the crash, Harold Ray West of Orono. West and his passengers were checked at Memorial Hospital Hospital and released. * . The Don Adams and Company Company bluegrass group consists consists of Jeff Howe on bass, R.B. (Rick) Jones on flat-top guitar, Paul Reddick on harmonica, Sally Shortt on 5-string banjo, and Don Adams on his 5-string banjo. The kitchen, he said, would be completed according to the specifications of the Department Department of Health. Sawyer also said it was a wish of the committee to paint the inside of the arena this summer in a similar manner to that of the outside of the building.
