Demoralizing to staff discredit to council Articles appearing in the newspaper of late have shown a betrayal of trust somewhere. somewhere. Something of this nature is demoralizing to staff and discrediting to Council. Due to the errors in reporting, I feel compelled to make some comments. , The Town Manager with approval of Council has done a great deal of research work toward-a salary administra- ,tion program. At the initial meeting with council on the matter, Council Members received such a proposal with considerable back-up material. material. At the next meeting, all members of council except Counc. Hobbs, were present and voted unanimously in favour of proceeding with the program. One week later, the Town Manger made a further presentation, it was received and agreed upon. Aifew days later parts of the report started appearing in the press, and what was reported was not 'accurate. Some of the comments of members of council were only partly reported and misleading. Only some salaries were referred to, why? The votes of council members were recorded recorded and vastly different than what was recorded in the newspaper. Further, I think it is fair to say that those who voted "no", may have done so because they felt some of the salaries were not high enough. It is not right to assume why a person votes negatively, without an explanation explanation from the person involved. Salaries for administrative staff and department Hea'ds in this Municipality have been much lower than other people with similar responsibilities in other areas. This has been the result of the restraint- exercised by theMunicipality continued from page 6) Lesle places third extra units would be needed to play their part in the economic upswing. Needless to say, that has not occurred and storing the remaining two units is a logical decision," Mr. Taylor said. The effect on the 580-man workforce on site at Wesley- ville will be gradual over the next 10 months as a considerable considerable amount of preparation is needed before the station is mothballed. About $300 million dollars has been committed to the station and about $80 million will be spent over the next 12 months. Structural steelwork at the site will be completed, the powerhouse enclosed and a heating system installed. All station components will be delivered and stored on stie which will have the benefit of fast in-service if the demand situation changes rapidly. A study is planned on the advantages of converting the two Wesleyville units to coal, or a combination of coal and oil, and this will be considered ,■ before the station is eventually eventually completed. If completed on schedule the station would have cost $660 million. Mr, Taylor said the Mini-- stry of Energy has been advised of the Board's action and he expected the government government would make some .response before the Board reviews the alternatives on further slow downs in construction construction at its meeting tiext month. and being locked-in by the A.I.B. guidelines. If this Town is to mature and accept responsibilities of growth, in order to save large sums of money via consultants, we must recognize the importance importance of administrative staff. ; G.B.
