Orono U.C.W. holds Christmas meeting • On the evening of December December 9, some 30 to 33 ladies of Orono U.CiW. gathered in the Main Hall at the. United Church for a pot luck supper. The tables were appropria t- 1 ely decorated for thé Christmas Christmas season with lighted . .candles there and on the piano. A variety of delicious dishes - both first coursé and desserts - was enjoyed by everyone present. Following the meal, Mrs. A. Hollingsworth led the group in singing several Christmas carols, with Mrs. B. Touch- burn pianist. A lovely duet, "Star of the East" was sung by Mrs. M. Weir and Mrs. C. Hooper. Past-president, Mrs. 0. Chatterton, conducted the' business period. Annual rep orts from units and committees committees were given. Devotions opened with singing Hymn 62, "While Shepherds Watched." Everyone joined in singing Hymn 53, "Silent Night". Mrs. Hollingsworth's meditation was entitled. "The Old Fashioned Christmas still has a message for our Modern World." There is nothing new about Christmas. It is an old story that we have heard with varying emphasis every Christmas Christmas since our childhood. We love Christmas because it enables us to cling to something something that doesn't change in a confusing, world. Mcllroy, A.M.C.T., , -Town Clerk, , 40 Temperance St. Bowmanvi lie, Ontario L1C3A6 ial things about Christmas do not change, even though the outward observances have been streamlined and brought up-to-date. The Christmas spirit still works its magic in the hearts of men - it seems to bring out the best in people. What we sometimes forget, in the exuberance of Christmas festivities is the fact that it is the celebration of the birth of one who split history into B.C. and D.C. One whose influence in the world has been greater than that of all the world's great men combined. The Christmas story tells of how God came in person to a world of darkness, entering into the life of man as a small child, humbling Himself to be boni in a stable, and sharing the common life that all men live. God became on of us that we might find a way to become something like Him. Christmas Christmas means many things to many people. May it mean this much to us - that the Christ of Christmas may be born anew in, our hearts and lives and homes at this season. -His presence will bring a new and deeper joy to us, and send us into the new year with fresh hope and courage. One verse of "Away in a Manger" was sung. The devotions closed with prayer. Mrs. E. Lycett conducted a most impressive "In Memor- iam". Three tall white candles candles were lighted intnemory of three U.C.W. ladies who had passed away in 1976. Mrs. Lycett gave brief summaries of the devoted service bestowed bestowed in the lives of Mrs. B. Best, Mrs. M. Staples and Mrs. M. Rowland. Three red roses, among a bouquet 1 of white mums, were also given in their memory.- Mrs. O. Chatterton presented presented corsiages to Mrs. E. Rainey, Mrs. B. Long, Mrs. C. Billings and Mrs. W. Irwin in recognition of their many years of faithful service to the Orono United Church women's women's organizations. » Prior to installing the new U.C.W. executive, Rev. Long mentioned that the church is composed of many ladies, each with varying duties, and ■■ all important to each other. We are reminded of the words of Isaih - "They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their , strength. They shall mount up with wings as eagles". The meeting closed by repeating the Mizpah Benediction Benediction in unision.
