"Christmas Magic oowmanville High "Christmas Magic", a program program of Christmas music, is being presented by the Osh awa Festival Singers at Bowmanville High School Auditorium on Sunday, Dec. Lockhart School ReporterJill Jensen I thought you might like to know about some of the things the Grade l's of Lockhart , School do. When you were in Grade 1 they didn't have things called Centers. Centers is where you have different spots to go and do things. The Grade l's of Lockhart School are following this procedure! Some of the centers for the theme "Me . and My Family" are: Painting: In painting they paint each person of their family and if they have room they put in their pets. Phonics : In phonics they take letters of the alphabet and put it on things that begin with that letter. Rooms : * In rooms the teacher writes a room of the house and lets the pupils look for things that belong in. that room. Booklets : In this center there are different booklets to choose from for work. They pick one like "l ean help Father" or "I can help Mother." In those they would draw a picture of themselves helping Mother or Father. Cut and Paste: In this they cut and paste people out of a catalogue who look like everybody in their family. The grade l's have centers every 3 or 4 days each week. There are usually 4 or more people in à center. After some of these things they write stories to go with them. Some days they go to a listening center. I found them quite interesting interesting and I hope you do too. In future, people people Will tend to live nearer to where they work and shop. • • • The fuel factor also puts new focus on ways to cut importation costs. Cana- uian communities have some ready-made examples among their counterparts south of the border. According to U.S. News, in some 3,400 communities taxis are the only means of public transportation. -Na- t'", vide, they move about X^per cent more people than all the mass transit, systems combined. El Cajon and La Mesa, •near San Diego, have contracted contracted with local taxi companies companies for city wide dia!-a-ride seryice at a flat rate of 50 cents a fare. Subsidizing the system costs less than the former bus service. Ames, la., population 43,500, does the same with a fleet of 15-passenger buses. • ln-ci'ty fare is 75 cents, rising to $1 farther out. If more than one rider boards at a single stop, the fare is split. • • • "Shared rides" is the key to the successful use of taxis "s mass transit. In some cities, ers sign up for daily service service to and from work. This is the third year the Festival Singers have appeared appeared in Bowmanville with a Christmas Special, and on each occasion they have excelled themselves with a bright colourful program, and the finest of guest artists, The, choir consists of 45 teenage girls all distinguished musicians. They have been together for approximately five years and in that time they have given many concerts concerts throughout the area. In musical festivals, they are entirely unbeaten in their category for the past three years and at the moment hold the Founder's Trophy for the finest performance by a group given at the Oshawa Riwanis Music Festival, also the Charles Allen Memorial trophy, a similar award donated by Peterborough Music Festival. This year an album has been recorded which is now on sale, and at the moment, the group is working towards a summer project. They have been invited to tour Scotland in the summer of '77, under the auspices of the Edinburgh Burns Club, the British Legion Legion and the Edinburgh St. Andrew's Society.. Plans are well underway for this tour, and under the direction of Elsie F. Drygala A.R.C.T., R.M.T. and a very enthusiastic enthusiastic parents' committee; funds are being raised for the trip. Tickets for the Bowmanville Bowmanville concert are $2.00, and students $1.00 which can be bought from choir members, or at the door. Needless to say, all proceeds will go towards the Scottish tour. Adding to the attraction is the one and only Civic Band of Oshawa, which has teamed with the Festival Singers on a few occasions with great success.
