The Minister of Community Community and Social Services has indicated that monies up to 80 per cent of total costs will be available for programs which meet with his approval. The purpose of Community Care, is to provide services to the elderly such as Meals on Wheels (already available in 3 areas of the Town of ( Newcastle), transportation to doctor's appointments, phsy- iotherapy, ' shopping, etc., help with both light and heavy housekeeping, home repairs (small jobs which would ordinarily be done by a family member), and friendly visiting. visiting. It is believed that these services would-enable many elderly to stay out of nursing homes thus reducing costs to themselves and to the community, community, as well as providing great psychological benefits. The backbone of Community Care would be volunteer service. The Social Planning Advisory Group for Durham has presented a brief to the Minister explaining how the program would be set up in this region and is anxiously awaiting his reply. F/R.
