Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, October 6th, 1976-7 Orono Fish and Hunt hold turkey shoot Before we get into the details of this event, I must say that I was a very relieved reporter upon arriving and not finding any live turkeys running around. I really don't think I could handle watching my thanksgiving dinner actually actually being shot. The turkey shoot is an event held each year at the fish and hunt club shooting range just south west of Leskard. In each round, five shooters fire their gun one at a time at a target some 35 yds. away. The target being a regular playing card and not a live turkey. The idea of the event is to get the most pellet holes in the card you are shooting at. During the time I was at the range the average number of pellets that left their mark in the cafd was 5 or 6. The winner was usually a 7 or 8. Upon talking to some of the shooters, I found how terrible a day it really was. Apparently Apparently it was too windy, although I didn't feel any wind. Another persdn remarked that the card was too small to get a •good lead on. Finally one person said the card seemed to be moving. At this point I realized that like any other sport, there are excuses for not winning and that is just exactly what I had been hearing. By the end of the day, 27 turkey's had been won. The Club has had to curtail its membership to forty members due' to there only being two courts and also as the only seating facilities are those on the stage. The Club members may bring visitors to play and this will help to some degree. The club plays in the gym of the Orono Public School on Tuesdays and Thursday evenings. Last year the club also conducted a full program of badminton on both nights where everyone gets their full opportunity on the coürts .
