8-Orono : Weekly Times, Wednesday, August 11th,, 1976 Cattlemen experience ma jor losses Losses being experienced • by cattle feeders for the past several months and by beef cow herd owners for the past two years have reached major proportions making producers question seriously whether or not they should continue in thè business. Ron Oswald, Chesley area beef producer and President of the Ontario Cattlemen's Association Association said today that producers who have sold market cattle recently at prices which last week reached a three year low have experienced such major losses that some may face bankruptcy while, many others will sustain a substantial substantial decline in the equity position of their business. Most seriously affected will be young cattlemen who have only been feeding cattle for a few years and have not had Welfare case loads drop by 15.1p.c. Weiiare caseloads, across the province, have dropped again by an average of 15,1 per cent since the. first of the year. "This continuing dec*- rease is a positive indication that more realistic eligibility has been effective," the Minister of Community grid Social Services, James Taylor Taylor pointed out. Based on the ten-city report on caseloads, which represents represents 60 per cent of the total provincial caseload, there were 3.4,972 people receiving General Welfare Assistance in June as compared with 35,697 in May this year and 37,233 in June 1975. "Caseloads "Caseloads have declined significantly significantly since the first of this year when the ten-city report showed a caseload of 41,185 people," Mr. Taylor said. "In the employable . category, 5,549 people left the welfare rolls between January and June, a 'decrease of 34 per cent," the Minister emphasized. emphasized. This has resulted in lower expenditures for General Welfare Assistance than budgeted budgeted for by most municipalities. municipalities. "Many more people are finding employment on their own, especially during the summer season, along with additional involvement from Canada Manpower and other alternatives. And this is to be encouraged in every way," Mr, Taylor concluded: Get Ready Get Set... the chance to build up an equity position in their business. business. Beef cow owners have already gone through two years where market prices returned barely half the production costs and it now appears certain that a third year of major losses is in store. The cattle industry both in Canada, the United States and other world countries is going through the cyclical heavy production period. Since it takes approximately three years from the time a decision is made to breed a cow until the time the market animal goes to slaughter, the industry is suffering from the rapid expansion in breeding herds which took place in the early 1970's. In spite of warnings from producer spokesmen spokesmen at the time, governments governments were encouraging expansion- expansion- and instituting programs programs to offer encouragement or divert resources from other commodities. Compounding the problem of increased cattle numbers, has been rapidly escalating production costs which for both cow herd owners and cattle feeder^ has * easily doubled in the.past few years. To illustrate What has happened in the cattle industry, industry, in 1974 fed cattle prices at: Toronto averaged approximately approximately $48.00 cwt. at a weekly kill level of 57,200 while to date in 1976 fed cattle prices at. Toronto have averaged averaged approximately $40.00 cwt. with a kill level of 70,100 an Sat., Aug. 14th GREAT TUNES OF THE 50s DRESS OF THE 50s OPTIONAL Refreshment arid Lunch TICKETS AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR, OR. Ontario Food Council, Ministry Ministry of Agriculture and Food, concentrate, on developing recipes that; really highlight tlie fresh flavor of On tari-, grown vegetables. This recipe features zucchini, zucchini, a tender summer squash, stir-fried and "sauced up" \yith. sour cream and fresh dill. ' ' SUCCHINI WITH DILL SAUCE 2 lb, zucchini, sliced Vz tsp, salt 2 tbsp. butter 2 tbsp. flour ■ ■1 cup sour cream 1 tsp. sugar 2 tsp. vinegar S tsp. finely chopped fresh dill Sprinkle the zucchini with salt. Let stand for half an hour.,Spread on paper towels and pat dry. Melt butter in a saucepan. Add zucchini. Toss with a wooden spoon until" well coated with butter. Cover. Simmer over low heat 10 minutes or - 00111 barbly tender. Do not overcook. Meanwhile, beat flour into the sour cream. Pour over zucchini. Stirring gently, simmer simmer 2 of 3 miriues until thick and smooth. Stir in sugar, vinegar and dill. Adjust seasoning if desired. increase ip, supply of 23 per, cent. Last week fed cattle prices at Toronto were $35.00 to $37.00 cwt. compared to $48,00 to $50.00 cwt. at the same time last year. This represents a decline in value of $130.00 for each animal marketed and for many cattle feeders a market price of $48.00 to $50.00 represents a break even price. Large cattle feeding operations marketing in excess of 1,000 head per year are facing losses of $100,000 to $250,000. Similar operations are facing proportionate losses. Mr. Oswald stated that both the Ontario and Canadian Cattlemen's Associations have been seeking the institution institution of a Beef Import Law from the Federal -Government -Government to offer their industry a small degree of protection, against imports of low priced beef from Australia and New Zealand. Said Mr. Oswald, "There is absolutely no reas- . on why the Federal Govern- : ment should not give domes- - tic food 1 producers import protection similar to that granted the clothing industry a few weèks ago and thereby ensure their domestic beef supplies in. the future for consumers.
