SPORTS Tennis Tournament , The Orono Tennis Club has made arrangements to hold à. tennis tournament for doubles on, this evening, Wednesday. Players are expected from the Town of Bowmanville to compete .with members of the local club. With the completion of the resurfacing of the two Courts earlier this year and with the new lighting system now in use Orono has the best courts in the Region and need take no back seat as far as these facilities are concerned. In speaking with Mr. Michael Carman, president of the Orono club, he states that the Orono club expects to have a number of such competitions in the future as well as local club nights. Orono Girls trade Wins with Loses In a game played July 8th Orono 1 defeated Bowmanville 4 by a 5 to 1 score. The top hitters for Orono were: Janett Armstrong with two - hits while Karen Irwin had a homerun, as did Charlene Rodd. The hitters for Bowmanville were Darlene Todish with a single and Georgia Todish with a homerun. On July 12th Orono 1 was defeated by , Bowmanville 2, 9 to 8. Charlene Rodd pitched the entire game with thirteen stike outs and only 2 walks. Janette Armstrong had a homerun and a double went to Brenda Rodd. On July 14th Orono was again defeated by Hampton, 6 to 5. Charlene Rodd was the pitched with 4 strike outs and only 2 walks. Doubles went to Janette Armstrong and Terry Battams. In a match against Waverly, Marinas goalie played outstandingly well and even though Marinas were defeated he kept the ball out of the net time and again. It is good to see these young players developing. KendalEagles defeat Ajax On Wednesday July 21, Kendal Eagles recorded their eleventh victory of the season by defeating Ajax 7 - 2. Eric Moore picked up his fourth win of the season as he allowed only six hits while having six strikeouts. Mike Carman was Kendal's leading hitter, collecting two hits and three R.B.I. Bill Mc.Cullough also had two hits while single hits went to Steve West, Jerry Thompson, Bill Robinson, Doug Taylor, John Kpbinson, and Fraser Wallace. E.O.B.A. SENIOR LEAGUE (as of July 25th) Winners of Junior Tennis tournament During the month of July a Tennis Clinic has been held at the Orono Tennis courts for Juniors, The clinic has been sponsored by the Recreation Department of the Town of Newcastle and conducted by Michael Carman and David Grey every Saturday morning morning and one evening. Last Saturday saw the completion of the program when a doubles tournament was held. The local juniors were divided into two Categories Categories according to their ability ability in the sport. Kevin Lowery and Shelley Richards won the Junior A Championship while Ryan Sutcliffe and Kathy Stacey were the winners of the Junior B series.
