He was fielding questions at the time from an audience of sofne twenty local Orono residents who were seeking clearance from the Health in order that Hoerst. Hoensch, a prospective purchaser purchaser for the Reid's Hardware Hardware property, could proceed with the construction of two stores and two upstair apartments. apartments. The meeting was called by Mayor Rickard who also had in attendance Mr.Horace Best,. By-Law Enforcement Officer for the Town Of Newcastle and Dr. Watt from the Regional Health Unit. Mr. Hoerst Hoens.cfa outlined outlined his plans for the burnt-out property with his intentions to construct one or two stores along with two apartments upstairs. He also . said he the AECB wouldn't cover- half the locations Where remedial work is required. < The Toronto consulting report report also said work had to be under way by no later than July 1 to allow five months of construction time. .MacLaren identified 110 locations which required work'- but included only 47 sites in the first phase of the oleamm would service the units with i holding tank fob sewage. 1 was pointed out that he was only replacing what was there before the fire, t Dr. Watt pointed out thal the size of the property was not large enough to allow a disposal system installed. Ir speaking on holding tanks he said it was- policy not tC approve such systems espec tally for new projects. He said approval could be given foi holding tanks if municipal sewers were known to be coming to Orono within the next two years. While speaking on holding tanks for the property Dr. Watt pointed out that the two apartments alone would have a volume of 480 gallons a day and- this would fill a 2000 gallon tank in five days. The 'cost of pumping opt the tank would, he said, cost $40.00 and this would be a costly way to handle the sewage. Dr. Watt stated that the Health.Unit was prepared to allow two stores on a, holding tank -and that that was basically their stand today. Mr. Hoensch said that it would not be feasible to construct only the two stores. He also pointed out if the building was only one story there would have to be extensive repairs to the remainder of the walls at either side of the building. "I would back out this minute". (continued naee in ) The major cleanup of radioactive landfill in Port Hope, scheduled to start July 1, has been postponed until early August, an Atomic Energy Control Board spokesman spokesman said. Dr. Barry Parson, co-ordinator co-ordinator of the AECB office in Port Hope, said the delay will enable the board to appoint a program manager to supervise supervise the initial $1.7 million work. Hopefully by then a permanent permanent waste disposal site will have been found, he said. The James F. MacLaren- report prepared in April recommended that the disposal disposal facility chosen by the AECB should be designed to handle at least 150,000 cubic yards. •" The minor cleanup that began Monday should not be construed as the remedial work outlined in the report emphasized Dr. Parsons. Contaminated material from selected properties in town is being stored in an abandoned factory owned by Eldorado Nuclear Ltd. on Port Hope's jetty. The factory, once owned by a bathtub manufacturing company, will be able to accommodate 10,000 cubic yards. The AECB co-ordinator said the work now in progress was permitted to proceed to allow various construction projects to start in Port Hope. He said once a permanent waste site is secured landfill in the factory will be transferred. transferred.
