Along with the annual meeting the group completed plans for the summer program of activités and received reports. Those elected to office were : President - Gordon Lowery Vice-President - Russ Major Secretary - Merle Graham Treasurer - Walter Stapleton Port Hope. The installation and operation of the Ganaraska Fishway since that time has enabled egg-laden female trout to deposit their precious "cargo" in habitat which supports healthy reproduction upon fertilization by their male companions. In, the first spring of operation of the fishway in 1974, approximately 525 . spawning adult rainbow trout were passed upstream. She weeks of operation in the spring of 1975 saw a healthy 600 rainbows passed. A whopping 1200 rainbow trout have already been passed this spring by the time of writing and indications are that this number will increase substantially ■ • ' . ; : , before the run is over. It took only 10 days ■ of operation this year to shatter the former ' record of 600 fish passed. While a number of factors are thought to be contributing to this year's "population explosion", Natural Resources fisher? managers suspect that reproduction in tv.-- Upper Ganaraska River from the 1974 spawning season is-now being reflected in the numbers of adults returning to spawn. It is anticipated that analysis of the age distribution of this year's returning adult population monitored at the fishway will . verify this theory. LOCAL DRIVERS OFF THE WIN SHEET Local drivers were unable to reach the win position at the Kawartha over the past week although many entries existed on both Thursday and Saturday. On Thursday Gerald Robinson finished sixth with Mighty Mustang, third with Pat's High Sea, second with Emancipator, fourth with Sesame Pick, second with Skooter and third with Arkansas Travller, On Saturday he was fifth with Tough Gier, fourth with Carman Chuck, second with Richard Clipper and away back in three other drives. Junior West finished fifth with Keomo, third with Lilli McAnn, third with Terina C. Derek Newman placed second with Wil Lor Ben and a fifth place finish ■ with Richland Clipper. Gord Robinson finished second with Scarlet Dares while Gord Irwin was third with Place Mat. It has been reported that Muddy George was a winner at Port de Low Bell. RAINBOWS GALORE! During recent weeks Lindsay District . trout streams flowing into Lake Ontario ' have been a real "hot bed" of activity. The volume of the annual spring spawning run of migratory rainbow trout from Lake Ontario has this year far exceeded any observed in recent decades. Conservation Officers in the field report" "more rainbows than ever" this year. Such aquatic resource management techniques techniques as water quality improvement, sea lamprey control measures and selective fish stocking of particular streams are paying dividends in a greatly increased production of quality game fish available to the angler. This success is not, however, entirely without its problems. The large number of spawning adult rainbows has attracted a sizeable clientele of those who would exploit this renewable resource at a most vulnerable period of its life cycle. Lindsay District Conservation Officers report that numerous charges have been laid for violation of the Ontario Fishery Regulations, Offenders face stiff fines by the courts for such illegal activities as netting and spearing trout. • GANARASKA FISHWAY ESTABLISHES NEW RECORQ In its third year of operation this spring the Ganaraska Fishway at Port Hope has far surpassed its previous records for numbers of migratory rainbow trout which have been passed upstream. These impressive game fish on their way from Lake Ontario to the spawning beds' of the * Upper. Ganaraska River have, until 1974, been denied access to many miles of prime spawning and nursery habitat by the- physical barrier of the Corbett Dam in, Expect big increase in Orono tennis It appears that the Orono Tennis Club is in for an increase in membership this year according to Club president, president, Michael Carman. Memberships are already being accepted by the club not only from local residents but from players as far away as Oshawa and Port Hope. Tennis activity started at the local courts on Sunday with both courts seeing plenty of action for a period of time during the afternoon.
