RCMP OFFICER DICUSSES DRUGS WITH KINSMEN .(continued from page 1) well and is an excellent force. In 1972 there were fifty arrests for marijuana which increased to 22 arrests for possession and 150 for trafficing trafficing in 1975. He said the units main concern is in trafficing. The speaker pointed out if you can keep a drug in short supply you then keep up the price with a reduced use. This was so, he said, with the more serious drugs such as Cocaine and heroin. Cocaine, he said, sells in Toronto now for $40,000.00 a pound with heroin at $25.00 a capsule. In speaking of cocaine, Corp. Pratt, said it was now in the area on a limited basis. Although heroin was not a problem in the Durham Region as yet, he said, don't hold your breath it could well be in three to. four years. In speaking on the various drugs the Corporal said the marijuana was the first step in the slide downwards. It is the stepping stone to the more senior and serious drugs", he said. The speaker was confident that the teenagers of today who become the parents of tomorrow will be more knowledgeable knowledgeable concerning drugs and he was hopeful that they could then help to straight.ne out the problem over the use of drugs. "They will be more able to teach their children the effects and problems related to drugs. The RCMP officêr stated that his unit did compile information that is used all 'over the continent and the world. He said many parents do phone the unit in Oshawa when they have a problem but will not give their names nor the names of those involved. "We can do little to help in these cases", he said. ■ He said it was important to realize that the unit was not about to make arrests from such information or to get people involved because they have furnished information. He did say that specific information can play a big part in curbing trafficing and the use of drugs in the area. At the conclusion of his speech he passed around samples of the various drugs. TO CONSIDER KIRBY KENDAL SCHOOLS AS ONE UNIT. No one would predict what would happen in the 77-78 school term other than it would have to be again considered at that time, It was also pointed out at the meeting that facilities at Kirby were somewhat better for the senior grades than those provided at Kendal. Mr, Cowing said he hoped that what was being done was for the benefit of the students. A suggestion from the audience to re-open the old Kirby school and close the school in Kendal received no answer. It was also stated that all other schools in the former Township of Clarke were experiencing large enrolments, enrolments, and for. this reason shifts from the Kirby-Kendal area could not be considered: Mr. W. H. Carman in speaking at the meeting said the proposal was being made : to maintain the quality of education and a desire to keep the Kendal school open. He also pointed but that under a one-school unit if a remedial reading teacher was brought into the Kirby school this same teacher would then be * considering students housed in the Kendal school. Mr. Gowing stated that busing had yet to be considered considered for the proposal but stated that no student would be held for a too extensive bus trip. : Orono Weekly Times, May 12, 1976 - 3 Building a House? or remodelling your present one?
