e_Orono Weeklv Timés, Wednesday, March 3,1976 Plenty of Orono action At the Kawartha on Sunday three Orono drivers were in the top four at the finish. Gerald Robinson took the win with Derek Newman third driving Marty Minty. Ray Staples finished fourth with his own horse, Phil Oakie. Derek Newman was third in the second race driving Bae State Swinger. Gerald Robinson came in for another good drive in the eighth race when he placed second with Arkansas Traveller. Minor Gordon won the event. Gord Robinson of Newtonville driving Peaches took a third place finish in the ninth race. Driving a Peter Johnston horse, Roan Baron. Junior West took a win at the Greenwood during the past week. He also placed third with Hilltop Anders, a horse owned by his wife Nancy. Muddy George, owned by Lawrence Hooey keeps well in contention and took a second place finish at the. Greenwood. Novice advance to finals The 'Orono United County Novice team have now advanced to the league finals after a resounding victory over Bewdley. To advance to the league finals the local Novice team took two straight wins from Bewdley with the last game being a one-sided 13-0 win. In the game Greg Vey netted six goals followed by Paul Rousseau counting his hat trick and two each to Stephen Clapdorp and Robert French. Assists went to Stephen Murree and Duncan Walker. Jeff Teravainen earning the shut-out in the Orono nets. The Orono team now faces the entry from Newcastle in the finals of the United County league. The first game of the series will be played in Orono this Friday evening. Camsport Tykes win again The Orono Camsport Tykes took a 6-0 win over Bewdley on Saturday in the United Counties league. Paul Henry lead the local boys with two goals while single goals .went to John Cowan, Keith Vey, Billy Buchanan and Ken Bailey. Bradley Roberts, Robin Lycett, Randy Cowan and Eric Drislinski all earned assists in the scoring. Mark Sargent played well in the Orono nets coming up with the shut-out. Atoms take no back seat The Orono O.M.H.A. Atoms advanced to the second round of the Divisional playdowns when last Wednesday the Oshawa Crane Orono atoms defeated Omemee 3-1. This gave .►Orono two straight wins over Omemee And the right to advance. The scoring on February 25 for Orono came off the st : cks of David Groskoff, Murray Dennis and J. D. Urbanic. Assists went to David Groskoff, Murray Dennis, Ted Oster and J. D. Urbanic. Eddy King was selectéd outstanding player of the game. Urbanic got his second hat, trick of the season to take care of the scoring for the Orono club. Assists went to Don Dâxtater and Eddy Ring. Player of the game was J. D. Urbanic. Beefeaters win 1, lose 2 The local 'Beefeaters' hosted a squad from the Oshawa C.Y.O. league on Friday night and came away on the short end of a 3-2 score. The locals first goal came off the stick of Scott Richards who has really been putting forth an outstanding effort in recent games. Randy «Tennant rounded out the scoring for Orono. , On Saturday the ®eefçaters' travelled to Grafton where they were part of a 16 team tournament. The locals first met the Bowmanville 'Grape Crush' squad. The final score was 3-1 but Orono was not officially awarded the victory because of a protest issued by the Bowmanville entry. Orono came through the protest with flying colours. Scott Prescott led the boys with two goals and Jeff Gray with a single tally. -Assists went to Scott Richards and Randy Tennant. This win sent the boys to the quarter-final round on SU'nday. The Beefeaters came up against the Cobourg Bradley Furniture team and this game has to go done as the most exciting game the boys have ever played. The Cobourg entry has won all their games this year by margins of 4 to 5 or 10 to 11 goals. The final score of this game with Cobourg was 5-4 in Cobourg's favour.'bue to an unfortunate circumstance after the game the names of the goal scorers were not available at press time but we will try to hâve them for the next issue. The next game is a Friday night exhibition game and the first game of their league finals against Bewdley will be on Saturday in Bewdley. PeeWee Flyers win last game The Orono PeeWee Flyers took a 4-3 win over the Millbrook Kings in the last league game of the season. Bret Johnson opened the scoring for Orono with an assist to Steven Wood. Steven Graham and Todd Miller both added further goals with assists to Ken Prescott, Jay Alison and Steven Wood. The winning goal came off the stick of Ken Prescott unassisted. The Orono Flyers were dubbed by the Orono PeeWee Hornets in an exhibition game 7-2. The Flyer goals .were scored by Bret Johnson and George Popodiçh with assists going to Steven Wood, Brad Heard, Steven Graham and Jay Alison. Pee Wees play in tournament On Saturday the Orono O.M.H.A. PeeWees participated participated in a tournament in Cannington. The first game the boys played was against a team from Oshawa. Oshawa opened the , scoring in the first period with two goals. The first Orono goal came in the second period scored by Paul Reed on a play with Alan Webster and Robbie Talsma. Duane Major added another on a pass from Dennis Klawitter. In the third period Steve Stec passed up to Duane Major who netted the puck giving Orono the lead in the game. With just 55 seconds left to play in the game Oshawa scored to tie the game. The tournament had been sét up with games ending in ties would be decided by giving the win to the club with the first goal" » This gave Oshawa the win. The Orono boys then went to the Consolation side of the 1 tournament. Here the Orono club met Omemee who Orono had defeated in the O.M.H.A. playdowns. Omemee however charged into the game with five first-period goals. Orono on the other hand netted only one goal and that off the stick of Duane Major with assist to Pete Rrukkert and Dennis Klawitter. Dennis Klawitter opened the scoring in the second period on a pass from Jim Moffatt and Paul Reed added another on a play with Robbie Talsma. Thé scoring remained the same through the third period resulting in Omemee taking the win 5-3. Dan Mitchell and Kevin Talsma shared the goal duities while Terry Hodges and Todd Haynes played real well. Exhibition win over Ops The Orono O.M.H.A. Bantams played a short-handed Ops team in an exhibition game on Saturday night taking a 8-0 win. Gary Bridger and Dale Dubeau combined for the Orono shut-out. David Hutton came in for a hat trick with three goals followed by Pat Williams with two goals. Ross Stutt netted a goal and two assists with Stephen Haynes scoring once and assisting on another goal. Tom Gustar added the eighth goal. Other assists went to Marcel Charland, Preston Long and David Sunstrum. Errored in skating report In last week edition of the Times we reported that Miss Stephanie Wood of Orono Figure Skating Club had won a silver medal at the Pineridge Interclub Competitons. It should have read Miss Stephanie Hood who competed in the Juvenile Ladies category (under 12 years). Eighty to attend re-union The latest word received received concerning the Orono Orphans reunion to be held on March 12th is that at least 80 former members of the team will be present for the occasion. Local organizers organizers are well pleased with the response and expect a grand eve'hing amonst old friends of former days. Many are travelling considerable distance to attend. Orono Country Jamboree growing with success During the summer of 1974 a Newcastle Day in Orono was , formed, combining the Orono Chambers of Commerce with Newcastle's Department of Recreation as well as the Orono Beef Bar-B-Q. Newcastle Newcastle Day was first held in August of 1974 and is now a yearly event. Bud Fanning, Director of Recreation, was asked to produce a Country Show as part of the Newcastle Day. It was suggested that Fay Adams & the Country Hits be asked to perform and they did so. The show proved to be so successful that the Orono Jamboree was started in the Orono Town Hall in September of 1974. The late Alfred Jakeman was Master of Ceremonjes; and Fay Adams Adams & the Country Hits was the back up band. This show was ' to operate once a month starting in November 1974 through to May of 1975. In June of 1975 the Jamboree Jamboree was held on a hot day in the Darlington Sports Centre, • Over one hundred people showed up to see "Rod Craig and the Country Addition" perform for them. Again in August, in 1975 "Rod Craig and , the.- Country Addition" were featured before a large crowd of six hundred people at Newcatle Day in Orono. The Orono Jamboree is into its second year with an average attendance of two hundred and fifty people, but its popularity is growing. It is a family show, like many other Jamborees. The Jamboree Jamboree in Orono attracts people from Scarborough right through through to Peterborough and Norwood and many fans also attend from the Town of Newcastle. This Sunday, on March 7th in the Orono Town Hall John Noonan, a guest artist from Rbseneath as well as twelve year old Janice Craig and her nine year old brother, Rodney will be performing. Also on the guest list is Maxine Winterbottom who is from the Hayloft Dance Party and Harold Fift who is from the Daisy "D" Jamboree, The house band, "Fay Adams and the Country Hits" will also be there.
