Two students,from Clarke High School competed in the High' School division of the Toronto Star Track meet last Friday afternoon. Jim Brennan of Kendal competed in the 50 metre hurdles and placed third in a field of six. Jim said with better conditioning hé should have been able to take the event. Brad Hillis also of Kendal placed third in his heat of OVCI" Fly 61*8 the 1000 yard dash and was in the top nine out of a field of twenty runners. the three game series with the second game to be played tonight, Wednesday, in Newcastle at 7.00p.m. The local Beefeaters scored three unanswered goals before Newcastle counted their lone goal. Scott Prescott scored two goals while Greg Stacey netted One and Randy Tennant rounded out the scoring in a play with Scott Prescott. Assists in the game went to Steven Mitchell and Kevin Taylor. The local boys played an outstanding game both ways with Don Stevens playing a solid game between the Orono pipes. Orono Hornets win O.M.H.A. Bantams, Consolation Winners The Orono O.M.H.A. Bantams although knockedput of a Bantam tournament in the first round in Newcastle over the week-end did come back to wiri'the Consolation Trophy for the meet. In the tournament the local club, in the last game played excellent hockey to earn their trophy. Sixteen teams were entered in the tournament which was held over a two-dav oeriod. Saturday and Sunday. The Orono team entered the play on Saturday and were defeated by Newcastle in the opening round 5-0. This placed Orono in the Consolation round starting on Sunday. The Orono club was first to meet Warsaw but the team failed to show due to another playoff game and thus Oron6 won the feature through default. The Orono crew then met Cobourg and took a close game 1-0 on a goal by Ken Evans with assist to Pat Williams. Gary Bridger played a solid game in the Orono nets and came up with his shut-out, Orono then advanced to the Consolation finals meeting Keene. Russ Stutt put Orono on the board scoring on a passout from David Sunstrum, Stephen Haynes then put Orono two up when he scored with assists to David Sunstrum and David Hutton. Before the end of the first period Keene scored their one and only counter. In the second period Ross Stutt added his second goal of the game with assist to David Hutton and Stephen Haynes. From here on in the Orono boys played a fine game of hockey with plenty of close checking. Extend Unbeaten Streak to 5 On February 11th the Orono Atoms hosted Ops Atoms in a return exhibition game. The Orono boys outshot the visitors 33 to 12 but couldn't score until the final two second of the game when they had pulled their goalie in favour of the sixth attacker. Peter Bolton scored the tieing goal with assists going to J. D. Urbanic and Don Doxtater. The final score 1-1 all. Peter Bolton was selected outstanding player of the game. 1 On February 15th Orono travelled to Ajax and again played to a 1-1 draw. Scoring the tieing goal for Orono was David Groskoff with assist going to Rodney Armstrong. David Groskoff was selected player of the game. Camsport Tyk<és continue to sail along • The Camsport Tykes continue their winning ways and* during the past weak took a 4-0 victory over their counterpart\ in the Village, the New Dutch Oven Tykes. Eric Dreslinski netted two goals with Bill Buchanan and Ken Bailey scoring the other two. Assists went to Steven Hickey, Ken Bailey, Darin Dennis. Mark Sargent in the nets for Camsport'earned the shut-out. This team along with the New Ducth Oven team and teams from Grafton and Newcastle will play ip a Tykç tournament this week-end atthe Orono arena. Orono Novice trounce Bewdley In the first game of the United Counties playdowns the Orono Novice team took a resounding victory 12-0 over Bewdley. Greg Vey scored four Orono goals with two each to , Stephen, Murree, Steven Clapdorp and Paul Rosseau. Single counters went to Robert French and Steven Quinn. In the assist department two were credited to Stephen Murree with others to Greg Vey, Robert French, Steven Quinn, David Cooper 2, Dean Faires 2, Roger King and Wayne Lycett 2. Beef-Eaters 2 for 1 The Roast Beef Atoms hosted a high flying Bewdley squad on Febraury 6th and came away on the short, end of a 8-1 count. The lone Qrono goal came off the stick of Randy Pennant. On Febraury 11th the locals were hosted by Newcastle in an exhibition game. Scott Prescott put' Orono on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal. Randy Tennant then scored an unassisted goal ending the scoring in the game and giving Orono the win 2-0. The Roast Beef Atoms played their first playoff game with Newcastle and took a win 4-1 to give the local an edge in - The Orono Hornet Pee Wees took a 4-2 win over the local rivals the Orono Flyers on February 11th. The four Hornet goals were shared by Keith Carr, Murray Dillon, Kevin Philips and Warren Nichols, The two Orono Flyer goals were scored by Bret Johnson with assist to Steven Wood and by Ken Prescott with assist to Stephen Graham. On February 12th the Hornet rang up another win defeating the Newcastle B team 1-0. Ian Morley was the hero . of the game netting the game deciding goal for Orono. The Hornets also played Bewdley B PeeWees but had to settle for the short end of a 2 to 1 count. Kirk Carr scored the Orono goal. Pee Wee Flyers tie Newcastle The Orono PeeWee Flyers played to a 2-2 tie with Newcastle B team. Bret Prescott scored the opening Orono goal on g play with Earl Atkins. Bret Johnson then scored the Flyer's second goal with assist to Steven Graham, The Orono Flyers took a well deserved win over Millbrook Flyers and exhibited in the game some good sound hard hockey. The local Fivers took the game 5-3. Steve Wood opened the scoring for Orono on a play With Earl Atkins and Ken Prescott. Kevin West then scored with assist to Steven Graham. Ken Prescott then scored his first of two goals with assist to Jay Olson and Earl Atkins. Jay Olson also made his . mark in the game with two assists and one goal in which assists went to Earl Atkins and Ken Prescott. It was a good win for the Orono Flyers. Win chance at Elm vale meet The Orono O.M.H.A. PeeWees on Staurday earned the right to advance to the Little NHL tournament being held in Elmvale during the spring school break, near the end of March. The local team entered in the Little NHL Tournament held in Little Britain on Saturday and came up thé winner of, the event. Orono first played Newcastle and opened the scoring at 7.33 of the first period on a goal by Dennis Klawitter with assists to Peter Krukkert and Terry Hedges. Newcastle however tied the score before the end of the period. Duane Major then put Orono out in front in the second period when he scored on a play with Terry Hedges. Paul . Reed added another for Orono when he scored on a passout from Todd Haynes. Newcastle however bounced back in the first part of the third period to tie the score. Orono however câme right back when Robbie Talsma fed a pass to Paul Reed who blasted the puck past the Newcastle goalie. This goal gave Orono the win 4-3 and put them in the final championship round with Millbrook. The local team went out in from when Robbie Talsma scored from Paul Reed and Alan Webster and this lone goal held for the period. In the second period Millbrook tied the score and this tie held until the last two minutes of the game. •With only 2.37 minutes left in the game Robbie Talsma scored his second goal when he slipped the puck by the Millbrook goalie with assists to Paul Reed and Alan Webster. Pete Krukkert added another for Orono with 30 seconds left in the game with assist to Duane Major. The final score 3-1, Dan Mitchell and Kevin Talsma played strong in the Orono nets , with fine support from Joe Davis and Jim Moffatt. This win allows the Orono boys to participate in the Ontario Little NHL Championships to be held in Elmvale. On Febraury 13th the Orono PeeWees played the Port Hope PeeWees in their Young Canada Week-end festivities. • Although Orono lost 5-2 they did play well against th,e stronger dub. Duane Major scored both Orono goals with assists going to Paul Reed, Pete Krukkert and Dennis Klawitter. All players received a crest and refreshements A most valuable player was picked from each team playing in the festivities. The choice was made by one of the Port Hope Panther Jr. C club. Jim Roberts also had a number of sticks autographed by the Montreal Canadians which were presented to the Most Valuable Players. Duane Major was chosen MVP from the Orono O.M.H.A. PeeWees. Orono Midgetjs Eliminated i' * The Orono United Counties Midgets were eliminated from the league playoffs in two ( straight game by Çolborne. Colborne won the opening game 3-1 Ivith Jeff Nichols scoring the lone Orono goal. In the second game of the series Colborne again came out on top with a score of 4-2. Jeff Nichols.and Matthew Robinson shared in the scoring for Orono. These two wins by Colborne eliminates Orono and allows Colborne to proceed further in the playoff series. Figure Skating Club; to be represented at Pineridge meet The Orono Figure Skating Club will be well x represented in the Pine Ridge Skating Competition being held in Uxbridge on Sunday; February 22nd. Those in the Pre-Preliminarÿ Category from Orono will be Kelli Buckley, Laura Anri Hickèy and Jackie Wood. In the Preliminary Category there will be Denise Maher, Karen Irwin, Donna Lowery and Peter Bolton. Stephanie Wood will compete in the Juvenile category while Beth Gatchell will enter competition in the Pre-Novice category. All competitors from Orono are entented "Good Luck". Carnival April 3 and 4 The Orono Figure Skating Club have set their dates for the annual Skating Carnival. It will be held in the Orono arena on both Saturday and Sunday, April 3 and 4. This will almost certainly endàctivities at the rink for the season. Robinson with two wins - ONE WIN REGISTERED AT THE KAWARTHA Gerald Robinson posted two wins over the past week with one at the }£awartha on Sunday in the seventh race driving Elmgrove Chief. Junior West v^as second in thè same race with Ambro Pine. Other events on the card in which Orono drivers competéd found them near the bottom of the pack. Gerald Robinson also drove to a win at the Greenwood with Mighty Mustang, a horse trained by Frank Stacey of Urono; Robinson also placed second with Coastal Kelly.
