Ernest Nichoson celebrates Leskard Church Hall was the scene of many happy reminiscences on Sunday when over 130 relatives and friends called to congratulate Ernie Nicholson, lifelong Durham Durham County resident and former Leskard miller on reaching the worthy age of 90 in good health and spirits. Ernie, assisted by his son Floyd welcomed the guests and Mrs. Ona Duvall had charge of the Guest Book. The visitors mingled happily a- mong old friends and the Leskard ladies, convened by Mrs. Ila Martin, assisted by Faye (Mrs. Gordon) Burnham, Burnham, Orono and Jean (Mrs. Gary) MacDougal, Oshawa, served refreshments. A flower arrangement from the Town of Newcastle and ones from relatives and friends decorated a long table where cards and gifts were displayed. Congratulatory telegrams telegrams were received from the office of the Prime Minister of Canada and from Robert Stanfield, leader of the opposition, Ottawa ; also a message from the Town of Newcastle. Douglas Moffatt, M.P.P. presented a Plaque from the Province of Ontario and Garnet Rickard, Mayor of the Town of Newcastle brought greetings as did Rev. and Mrs. Long, Orono and friends from Dunsford, Indian River, Lindsay, Peterborough, Oshawa Oshawa and Pontypool as well as many local neighbours. Ernie is a son of the late Wm. Nicholson, a Manvers farmer and his late wife, Jane Beacock of Cartwright township township and was one of nine children to grow up on the farm near Lotus. He was especially pleased to have present his two surviving sisters : Mrs. Zelma (Richardson) (Richardson) Skuse of Lindsay and Mrs. Luella Burgess of Lindsay; Lindsay; also two sister-in-laws; Mrs. Leona Cliff, Oshawa and Mrs. Rollie Shackle ton, Bowmanville, Bowmanville, R.R. 1 and his grand-daughter, Faye and her husband, Gordon Burnham of Orono and their three young children, Andrea, Jason and " 90th yea r Ashley. Ernie's late wife was La- vina Shackleton. When first married they farmed for five years. Then he operated the Lotus chopping mill for three years before moving to Leskard Leskard in Clarke Township where he ran the mill from 1921 to '52 and during part of that time the Pontypool mill as well. Ernie can tell many fascinating fascinating stories of incidents throughout his long lifespan and of the great fellows he dealt with in his years as a miller. He states it has been a very rewarding and interesting interesting life and he has met fine people and loyal friends whereever he happened to be. His first car was a 490 Chev which he bought in 1918 and which he later made into a light pick-up truck by shearing shearing off the back portion. When hydro was first introduced into Leskard he and Lionel Dent were the only ones to sign up as they had to pay to have the line, built in the eighth and the Pontypool road. To-day the cross-roads community community of Lotus seems a quiet spot to him but in his youth it had many shops and there were often 30 or 40 buggies on a week-night lining the streets when farmers came into town. Before the building of the first church services were held in the Temperancè Hall and he remembers helping tear down an old Methodist church in Ballyduff and moving moving it to Lotus. He attended an ! early frame school and later ' helped to draw bricks from Lindsay for the brick school which his young sister later attended. At one time there were over sixty members of the Orange Lodge as well as various sports and neighbouring neighbouring gatherings. He states this has been a great life and rests content with this celebration building building one more cherished memory, memory, Now he looks forward again with confidence that the future will surely hold much good for coming generations.
