tO-ORONO WEEKLY TIMES, MAY 14th, 1975 g ■SPORTS THE ORONO SPORTS SCENE The Orono sports scene for the summer of '75 is packed with activity for both boys and girls in most age categories. The Orono park is the centre for the majority of the summer sports but the schedule is so full the park is unable to handle it all. We understand that a softball diamond is to be set-up at the fair grounds and it is expected that the playing field at the Orono Public school will also be put into use during the summer. T-BALL FOR BOYS Twenty-seven boys in the area have registered for T-Ball in Orono and from this group two teams have been organized. The two Orono teams will play an interlocking schedule with teams from Newcastle and Bowmanville until the end of June. TYKEBASEBALL Orono is also supporting a Tyke baseball team this year with twenty boys registered to play. A meeting is to be held to arrange a schedule between Pontypool, Kendal, Newcastle, Bowmanville and Orono. The only gap in the local sports line-up comes in PeeWee and Bantam baseball with none being promoted in Orono due to little interest from that age group. MIDGET BASEBALL Orono has a Midget team and this team will play in the Eastern Ontario Baseball league during the summer. GIRLS NOT UNDONE THIS YEAR Fifty girls in the 7 to 13 age bracket have registered to play softball out of Orono. To accommodate all the girls four teams have been organized and these teams will play amongst themselves into the first part of July . Bowmanville also has four such teams and teams are being formed in other centres such as Newcastle and Hampton. In September the best team from each centre will play in a playdown series for what may be termed the championship of the area. There is also T-Ball for girls 7 and 8 years of age and this is being played at the local park on Monday nights. It is possible that these girls may play a few exhibition games with entries from Bowmanville. LOTS OF BOYS FOR SOCCER Between 30 and 40 boys have registered to play Soccer out of Orono and these boys are in the 7 to 14 years age group. With this number of boys more than one team will be formed and it is proposed that the Orono clubs could play in a league with teams from Newcastle, Bowmanville and Kendal. A DESPERATE NEED FOR COACHES There is one hang-up in all the promotions and that is the annual occurance of a lack of coaches and this is especially true of the soccer teams. Mr. G. Lowery states that a coach need not know that much about the sport at this age level and all that is required in someone to look after the boys during practices and the few games that they might play. SENIOR SOCCER RETURNS TO ORONO After a period of twenty-six years Orono is again to have a senior Soccer team which will play in the Darlington Soccer league. Gord Lowery states he is the only one left of the last Orono team in 1949 still playing. It is expected that the club will play their home games back of the public school MEN'S SOFTBALL There has been a great interest this year in recreational men's softball and at least three teams will play out of Orono in a Town of Newcastle league. It is not hard to see that with all these teams playing out of Orono scheduling for time on diamonds or playing fields is rather difficult at this time. Kendal Eagles Schedule 1.
