NEWS Orono Mino* ORONO NOVICE REGISTER TWO WINS The Orono Novice hockey club took a ".5-1 victory over a visiting team from Bowmanville. The Orono goals were equally shared by G lemr Jenkins, Paul Morton, Keith Hudgins, Greg Philps and Randy Tennant. The Novice team also defeated Grafton by a 6-2 count with Steven Clapdorp and Andy Davey both scoring two goals each. The other goals came off the sticks of Steven Murrie and Roger King. ORONO FLYERS DEFEAT ATHLETICS The Orono Flyers defeated the Orono Athletic Atoms by a count of 4-1. Ken Farrow came up with a three goal hat trick with the other Flyer's goal by Kirk Carr. Wayne Loschke scored the lone Athlectic goal, The Orono Roast Beef Atoms edged a 3-2 win over Newcastle. The three Orono goals were shared by Bruce MacLean, Willie VanSegglen and Jay Olesen. KINSMEN AND HORNETS TAKE WIDE MARGINS The Orono Kinsmen Pee Wee team took a wide 5-1 win over the Orono Flyers. Tom Hollinger and Ross Stutt both scored two goals each for the Kinsmen with the other goal by Wayne MacLean. The Flyer goal came off the stick of Russell Nickerson. The Orono Hornet PeeWees showed their power wityh a 6-2 win over the Newcastle entry. Steve Stec came up with a three goal effort in the win with the other counters by Paul , Reed, Earl Atkins and Ken Prescott. ( Recreation Style) Due to the Service Club softball tournament held last fall in Memorial Park, Bowmanville, Bowmanville, the Director of Recreation is getting a number number of requests from people who want to play softball for fun. Mr. Wayne Martin of Orono said there maybe three teams formed in Orono, two from the sub-division, and one from Orono. There is a feeling that a Recreation League could be formed with Service Clubs from Bowmanville, Orono, Newcastle Village plus other teams from Hampton, Court- ice, Newtonville, possibility of some of the local factories in the Area. To Establish Newtonville Tennis Courts Youth At the Community Services Meeting held on Monday, February 17th Councillor D. Allin and Director of Recreation Recreation Bud Fanning were detailed detailed to approach the Durham- Newcastle School Board regarding regarding Four Tennis Courts on the Parking lot area at the Bowmanville High School and the Courtice High School. Mr. Fanning also mentioned the possibility of extending the asphalt area at Lord Elgin Park and fencing it in. This would give use two courts. DUTCH OVEN BANTAMS OUT IN FRONT The Orono Dutch Oven Bantams shut-out the Orono «- TP* |«* Falcons by a 3-0 count. Dale Dabeau secured the shut-out 1C0 .F ISHlHg while team mates Stephens Haynes, Kerry Davis and Pat Williams scored the three goals. In exhibition hockey the Orono Bantam Eagles took a 9-2 win over a visiting Bowmanville team. Gary Clapdorp showed the way with three goals followed by Daug Hancock with a two-goal effort. Single counters went to Marcel Charland, Mark Charland, John Antinoides, Doug Keamer. ORONO MIDGETS DEFEATED BY BEWDLEŸ The Orono Midgets suffered a defeat at the hands of the Bewdley midgets, 3-1. The lone Orono goal cane off the stick of John Nanninga with assist to Larry Haskell. Newcastle Town Hockey NEWCASTLE TOWN LEAGUE HOCKEY REPORT by HAD REGIONAL TIE SERIES Regional Reclaimers tied final series at one game each, when they beat Elmhurst Hotel 5-3 Sunday night at the Ice Palace. In the first period there was a exchange of goals one by R. Rickard (Elmhurst) and one by D. Norton (Regional). Elmhurst took the lead late in the second on a goal by M. Doyle and held the Reclaimers off the score board until latè in the third. With only 2 minutes 15 seconds left to play P. Fox beat goalie George Van Dam tieing the game at 2-2 and sending it into overtime. FOUR OVERTIME GOALS Regional Reclaimers took the lead at the 31 second mark of the overtime period on a goal by W. Pearce, Regional went on to score twice more, one by B. Stiles and one by D. Norton his second of the nights The other overtime goal went to Elmhurst's Ron Slack. Goalie George Van Dam of Elmhurst had the hardest work of the night stopping fourty-five shots while Don Todd, Elmhurst stopped seventeen. TOWN LEAGUE 9 JUNIOR D 5 In the other game of the night the Newcastle Town League Combines downed the Newcastle Junior D 9-5. COMMENTS Next Week's action will be Elmhurst playing host to Regional Reclaimers in their third game of the finals. Time 7 o'clock. Ah exhibition game between the Newcastle Town League Combines and the Oldtimers starting time 8:30. During the last two weeks of January Conservation Officers Officers conducting creel census on Lake Scugog checked a total of 165 fishermen. These men were using a total of 286 lines and fished for 394 hours. Their total catch consisted of 14 fish, six being largemouth bass which were returned into the lake, and remainder being: 8 pickerel. The average effort for each pickerel caught was, 49 hours of fishing. The pickerelranged from y 2 pounds pounds to the largest at 9'i pounds. Conservation Officers reported reported giving three warnings regarding too many lines per angler and unattended lines. One fisherman reported vandalism vandalism to his hut. As of January 27th there was a total of 116 huts on the lake. It is the responsibility of the fishermen to remove all huts and debris from the ice by March 31, 1975. Program The Recreation Department for the Town of Newcastle has set forth a program to be undertaken in the hamlet of Newtonville. The program follows a méeting in the hamlet with parents and teenagers. It will include indoor activities as well as a physical fitness program. The Recreational Department Department is hopeful that parents in the area will assist with the program to be held in the school and community hall. Call Airport Durham With an announcement by the federal government on the proposed Pickering airport imminent, Durham Region council wants the airport named after itself. Durham International Airport Airport however didn't have easy sailing through council Wednesday Wednesday though. It had to battle off such other candidates as Pickering airport, Lester B. Pearson airport and Greater Oshawa airport before council gave it the nod. The only thing all councillors councillors agreed on was that it shouldn't be named after Toronto. Airport May Come East Since the federal government government has now finalized its decision in the matter of the O.P.P. The Newcastle Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police investigated investigated the following Motor Vehicle Vehicle Collisions and occurrences occurrences during the period February 17,1975 to February 23, 1975. Twenty-three Motor Vehicle Collisions were investigated in which five persons were injured. As a result of these collisions four pèrsons have been charged with offences under the Highway Traffic Act. The Newcastle officers also investigated seventy-six occurrences occurrences of a general nature. Some of these occurrences are as follows : There were four investigations into "THEFT" offences, three investigations into "BREAK AND ENTER" offences and two investigations into complaints complaints of 'ASSAULT". Other activities included investigations investigations into reports of lost and found properties, domestic complaints and complaints of erratic drivers. Four persons have been charged with offences under the Liquor Control Act and three persons have been charged with offences under the Criminal Code. Local horses and drivers were not too evident in the races at Kawartha Downs on Sunday. Not unitl the eighth race did thev really appear but it was with a vengeance.
