MARIE - The Osliawa Hawkeyes have booked their first-ever trip to the Northern Football Conference final. With a resounding 42-17 win in Sault Ste. Marie Saturday, the senior Hawkeyes will now get a chance for revenge against the Milton Marauders this coming Saturday in Milton, with a berth in the national championship in Red Deer at stake. Revenge might be a bit of a strong word, in this case, as the Hawkeyes didn't actually lose to the Marauders on the football field this season. Instead, Milton was awarded a 28-0 win by forfeit forfeit when an already-rescheduled game between the clubs on July 10 •couldn't be played after the City of Oshawa closed Civic Stadium due to poor field conditions. "They took a game from us that they didn't deserve and we want to show them that they didn't deserve it," says Ian Bunting, general manager manager of the Hawkeyes. "We might sound a little bit cocky, but at this point if you're not cocky, there's something wrong. You have to go into games thinking you're going to win." They'll certainly be going in on a high note after handing the Soo Steelers a second loss this season on their own turf. After pulling out a miraculous one-point victory victory during the regular season, the Hawkeyes allowed for a lot more breathing space this lime. Three touchdowns in the final two minutes of the first half turned the tide, as Oshawa went from trailing 10-7 to leading 28-10. Although the Steeler^ narrowed the gap with a touchdown just 35 seconds into the second half, the Hawkeyes' defence then held the fort until two late touchdowns put the game on ice. Quarterback Chris Foster spread the ball around nicely, completing 17 of 27 passes for 313 yards and hitting four different receivers for scores. Dave Beaulieu was Foster's favourite target Saturday, as he hit him seven times for 180 yards, but Rob Horstman, Chris Draffin and Phil Dixon also gathered in touchdown strikes. Evan Davis led the ground game with 88 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries, while Dave Dinnall accounted for the other major, an 11-yard run in the final minute. Oshawa was responsible for the only two defeats the Steelers suf fered this season. "It proves a lot. They were 7-1 this season and were in first place," says Bunting. "We've had to do this die hard way and so far we're doing it." Indeed, thanks in large part to the forfeit loss, the Hawkeyes' entire NFC playoff run has taken place on the road. They finished with the same 6-2 regular season record as the Marauders, but will have to travel for the final thanks to the head-to-head result.
