Argos brass, led by head coach Mike 'Pinball' Clemons, brought the club to Oshawa on Sunday afternoon to give local football fans a taste of CFL action. "We always enjoy getting out and being a part of the community," said Clemons, who practised in Oshawa as a player with the Argos once in the -- early 1990s. Unlike the rest of the squad, Clemons Clemons wasn't around the entire day to promote the game. Instead, he was back in Toronto at a press conference to introduce the newest member of the Argonauts in suspended NFL running back Ricky Williams of the Miami Dolphins. However, one familiar face that stuck around for the day was that of Oshawa product Andre Talbot, who loved the feeling of being back in his home- Prospects Tavares named top rookie in Canada, Del Zotto signs BY BRIAN MCNAIR Staff Writer Ron Pietroniro/Metroland Durham Region Media Group Oshawa native and Toronto Argonaut Andre Talbot hauls in a pass during the Argos practice at the Civic Stadium on Sunday afternoon. town. "It's a lot of fun. I have some memories memories from here, some great memories," said Talbot after the practice, while some young, eager football fans waited patiently for an autograph. "It's good to come back to the old stomping grounds and show 'em what I got." He did just that on the big' stage last season, setting career highs in receptions receptions with 48 and receiving yards with 679, while adding a pair of touchdowns. touchdowns. So, having established himself as a prominent figure in quarterback Damon Allen's offence, what docs Talbot Talbot have in mind for year two of his resurgence? "Just to build on my momentum. I'm hoping to have a great year, hopefully have a 1000 yards (receiving) and win a Grey Cup," he said. Those Grey Cup chances received a boost with the signing of Williams, the former Hcisman Trophy winner and NFL rushing champion. His joining the double-blue had been speculated about for the better part of a month, however, Talbot maintains the possibility of signing such a high- profile NFLcr who is still in his prime, was never a distraction for the club. "No," he bluntly slated., "We're in our own little bubble there during training camp. There is so much work going on, practices and meetings so we don't focus on that. (When) he comes in and helps the team, then we're all for it. "We'll accept him as a member of the family. Everything I have heard, he is a great person. So if he can come in and help us win, that's what it is all about." Although unable to suit up because of a knee injury, linemen Jeff Keeping Keeping of Uxbridge was also in town with the club, and like Talbot, was elated to return to the site of so many great memories. "I would have loved to have been able to strap it up out there with the rest of the guys, but even still, being here still brought back plenty of great memories," said Keeping. The Argos season gets underway on June 17 against the Hamilton Tiger- Cats. - ■ OSHAWA - The past few days have generated much excitement about the future of the Oshawa Generals. On Thursday, just prior to leaving for the Memorial Cup in Moncton, Generals GM/ coach Brad Selwood signed 2006 second overall draft pick Michael Del Zotto. ! On Friday, 2005 first overall pick John Tavares was named the Canadian Hockey League's rookie of the year during the national championship championship tournament's ■ annual awards ceremony. ceremony. And the entire weekend reinforced reinforced the Generals' Generals' belief that 2008 would be a mighty fine time to host the Memorial John Tavares . C ,up themselves • where success will no doubt: lie with .. the development of those two players. With all that in mind, Selwood's mood was bordering on giddy upon his return from Moncton. Seeing Tavares take the top rookie award in Canada, just over a year after he was drafted at 14 as an exceptional underage player, was particularly pleasing. "He comes into (2006) camp still 15, that's what I can't get my head around," Selwood says when asked what to expect down the road from Tavares. "I'm amazed 1 at how he listens and learns... I don't know what to expect from him. He's so driven." Tavares, who scored 45 goals and added. 32 assists in 65 games, is eligible to play three more seasons in the Ontario Hockey League before getting drafted into the NHL. ■ Selwood was also relieved to get Del Zotto's signature on a contract. The talented talented defenceman had 30 goals and 90 assists in 73 games with the Markham Waxers minor midget team last season. "He's mature way beyond his years," Selwood says of Del Zotto, who turns 16 in June. "He makes the first pass, he skates, like the wind, shoots the puck like a cannon and he's physical." Selwood had earlier signed second round pick Dean Howard and third rounder. Anthony Peters, but had a little more difficulty difficulty than expected coming to terms with Del Zotto. Merchants fit to be tied DURHAM - The battle of Durham settled nothing on the lacrosse floor Sunday night. The first-place Ajax-Pickering Rock (4-1-1) travelled to Brooklin to play the fourth-place Merchants (2-3-3) in Ontario Lacrosse Association senior 'B' action with the teams playing to a 6-6 draw, with a 10-minulc extra frame failing failing to break the deadlock. The hosts were in full control of the outcome in the third period, leading 6-4 with about seven minutes to go, when they allowed the Rock back into the game. At the 6:07 mark, Mark Craig scored his second of the contest. After moving deftly past a Merchants defender, defender, his hard shot beat goal tender Rick McCulloch to bring Ajax-Pickering back to within one. On the power play with 1:15 remaining, remaining, the Rock struck for the equalizer when team captain Jim Veltman swooped past the Brooklin defence, gathered in a rebound and beat McCulloch cleanly.
