durtiamreglon.com THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ May 10,2006 ♦ Page A9 Municipality to serve up healthy eating program BY JENNIFER STONE STAFF WRITER CLARINGTON - Kids in Clarington will have an opportunity to take part in a new program aimed at increasing physical activity and healthy eating starting starting this fall, but they still won't be allowed to use the Municipality's fitness facilities on their own until they're 13. Courtice mom Lisa Corkery approached council last winter, asking that the admission age requirement be dropped from 13 to seven at the Municipality's fitness centre. Her request stemmed from a dramatic recent weight loss she achieved, and a wish to have children avoid getting to the point she did. She dropped from 320 pounds to 155, thanks to a combination of gastric banding surgery and working out at the Courtice Community Complex. She was concerned, she said, that her own daughters might follow in her footsteps and hoped reducing the centre admission age would help encourage early fitness. But, a survey of' other municipal facilities in the GTA done by municipal staff didn't support the idea of reducing the admission age, for a number of reasons, says a report from the Community Services department. The equipment is sized for an adult and there was some feeling that children should be play ing outside, said some respondents. As well, there was a worry that adults would not be interested in sharing space with children that young. Not only that, but there was also some belief that not even parental supervision would be enough, since "parents might not be aware of the child's physiological limitations," said the report from staff. The supplier of Clarington's fitness equipment also had reservations, telling staff there was a concern about children's maturity and the judgment abilities of children, who might not use the equipment safely. So, Clarington's recreation department has.suggested has.suggested development of a 12-week program, offered in three one-hour sessions per week, for children aged seven to 12, accompanied by a parent or guardian. The program'would include segments on healthy eating and physical activity, both through games and muscular-conditioning and flexibility training, though yoga or stretching. Clarington staff has recommended starting the program program in September. Though she wasn't granted exactly what she wanted, Ms. Corkery said she was pleased with the new program and "appreciates the opportunity to work with the Community Services department in creating this new program." " "Obviously, this is democracy in action when you've effected some positive change for Clarington," said Mayor John Mutton. ttk Coutam ftlattii teallnf with record heat and mknciwn 1u * drlrcr gel» houtt on child poroopiphy 2Î? «=« SSÏ PtU Invtitlyiion rnth wuh as m jÉilÉjÉi Order from oif ing: • Ajax-Pickering: 905-683-5110 Oshawa-Wtiitby- 905-579-4400 Port Perry: 905-985-7383 Uxbridge: 905-852-9141 This Week Œxbribge Etme8- journal News Advertiser Canabian Statesman Citizen PORT PERRY STAR M Metroland Durham Region Media Group iliirhamretjion .com 50 MILLION DOLLAR INVENTORY SELL OFF SALE At Sears when you purchase $25 or more, before taxes, of any Cosmetics Fragrances , r Sears Card, you'll receive a UP TO °/< r OFF EVERY ITEM IN THE STORE ON SALE!
