n : 2 ♦ THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ DECEMBER 28,2005 Clarinetm Leading the Way ^ 905-623-3379 ' * li durtlamre9i0n.com info@clarington.net IB; MAYOR'S CORNER UNSUNG HEROES As parents we all think about the safety safety of our children. Clarington has 35 unsung heroes who are concerned about the safety of your children too. They are the School Crossing Guards who are there each and every school day, in all types of weather to ensure your child crosses to school safely. Clarington Crossing Guards are in place for the safety of the students of the Municipality of Clarington. When a traffic study determines that the number of vehicles warrants it, a crossing guard is put in place for the school in question. The guards are trained and are equipped with the necessary equipment. They are on the front line ensuring the students cross the roadway safely. They are the ones who enter the roadway first, ensuring the way is clear before any students step off the. curb. It may surprise you to learn that some guards have been ignored or gone unnoticed by motorists who simply drive on by the guard and through the crossing. Running a school crossing is a traffic offence. They encounter motorists who, although they come to a stop, do so only a few feet away from the guards. They must also deal with drivers who are rude and not respectful respectful of their role to protect the lives of young students. Crossing Guards stand in the cold', traverse ice, snow banks and puddles, and chat with the children while always looking out for'their safety. They do it all with a great sense of pride. We have a phenomenal group of guards, some of whom have been with us for 15 and 20 years. This longevity speaks to the dedication they have towards their work. Although their hours of work are prescribed, many will stay those few minutes longer longer to pick up the stragglers and cross them safely, or provide a student who has forgotten his mittens with a spare pair from their own pocket. So when you send your children off to school in the morning, morning, take a few minutes to remember the Clarington Crossing Crossing Guard who is there every day, rain, sleet or snow, to ensure ensure your loved one arrives at school safely. You can help ensure the safety of our students by remembering to be aware of school zones, slowing down and stopping well, back of the crossing, especially in inclement weather. Thank you to all our Crossing Guards for a job well done.
