Seeing Seeing snow covered trees and lawns may be a beautiful sight, but there is a dark and treacherous side. As beautiful as it may be on the trees, snow on our sidewalks and roadways is not so attractive. They can become icy paths almost without notice. The Operations Department is responsible for keeping municipal roads safe and cleared. In the last two years, our crew has responded responded to over 120 snow "events." Our "Snow Fighters" require the assistance of the public to make sure that they can do what they need to do without risking the safety of themselves and others - especially children. When the snow piles up, as it will, please make sure that the children in your neighbourhood understand how dangerous it can be to make forts in the snow banks created when we plough your street. Another Another way to help us keep our roads safe is to make sure that your vehicle is not parked on the street during or immediately following a significant snow fall. Follow well behind the plow giving yourself yourself adequate distance from flying snow and sand that the plow truck may give out. All winter vehicles use distinctive flashing blue lights. Use caution at all times. By working together, we can make sure that everyone enjoys the beautiful side of snow and winter. Another program that also contributes to the safe enjoyment of winter is the Sidewalk/Windrow Snow Clearing program. This service is available to any -senior (65 years +) or person with a physical disability who submits an application and complies with some basic criteria. One criteria is that the applicant lives in the urban area of Bowmanville, Courtice, Orono, Newcastle, or in the Hamlets of Newtonville, Tyrone, Leskard, Haydon, Kendal, Solina, Hampton, Burketon, Enniskillen, Maple Grove, Enfield, Mitchell Corners or Kirby. The service starts after a snow fall ends.and only if there is more than one inch of snow on the sidewalk. The resident is responsible to provide sand/salt as required. Clearing driveway windrows does not start untilafter all municipal streets have been cleared - the windrows must be over six inches or more deep before the windrow program is triggered - we average over 600 residents on this program. Our staff is committed to providing you, the community, with the highest level of service possible. For those of you who live on a culde-sac (we have over 100), please understand that the Operations Operations staff will do everything possible to remove the snow, but there is no cost effective way to avoid piling it temporarily in and along the cul-desac. Please remember that municipal roads are cleared on a priority basis to ensure that routes used by emergency emergency vehicles can get through if needed. Our people work continuously continuously until the job is done. All we ask if for your patience and for you to know that we are coming! Our night patrol monitors the roads; to ensure that when yoiï head to work,or, school,, you yyjijV find a safe passage on our municipal roadway system.hologies, The Clarington Board of Thide is geared up to promote local shopping in Clarington this Holiday Season! TSH Engineers Architects Planners 513 Division Street Cobourg, Ontario. K9A 5G6 Tel: 1-800-463-8046 The following tips are offered by the w , Christmas Tree Farmers of Ontario y - 4 Remember, a Christmas tree is a living thing. Look after it care- > fully as you would a cut flower. Once you select a Christmas tree, follow these suggestions to keep it fresh and safe: y | If you buy a tree several days before you plan to set it up, store À the tree outdoors or on a cool porch or patio until you are ready 3 to decorate it. An area that provides protection from the wind A and sun will help the tree retain its'moisture. . A If you plan to store the tree for several days, make a straight cut across the butt end of the tree about one inch from the end. This opens the tree stem so it can take up water. Store the tree . upright and place the butt end in a container of water. When you bring thé tree into the house for decorating, make an- . other fresh cut across the trunk about an inch from the original cut. Use a tree stand that holds plenty of water. Trees are thirsty. They may drink up to four litres of water per day, so be sure to check daily and supply fresh water as needed. A ; stand which holds at least four litres of water is recommended. • If you allow the water level to drop below the bottom of the tree, a seal will form just as it does on a cut flower and a new cut will be'necessary. , , ,• Place your tree away from fireplaces; radiators, television sets and other sources of heat. Turn off the tree lights when you leave. and before you retire at night. Avoid'the use of combustible' decorations. Check all electric ' lights and connections. Lights with worn or frayed cords should be discarded and replaced with new lights. The new LED lights burn cooler and save energy too! NEVER use lighted candles on a Christmas tree. Following these care and precaution measures should ensure an Y attractive tree that stays fresh indoors for two to three weeks. Business by the Lake ~ The Braemar!
