The robust forward who helped the Eagles win the Eastern Conference championship' in 2003/04 will be back mucking it up along the boards, in the corners and in front of the net this season Durham Synchro good as gold EDMONTON - In its first season of competition, Durham Synchro's Masters team has brought home gold from the recent World Masters Games in Alberta. The team was, first overall in both technical and free competition, and also claimed gold in the team championship. In duet, Shannon Murdock and Kirsten Mills also took First in free, and first in championship, while Joy Simon's solo took silver across the board in technical, free, and championship. Durham's Masters also brought home the Olympium Aggregate Award for the highest scoring average of all swimmers, plus the coveted Gladys Hambrook Trophy Trophy for highest routine score in Canada. Throughout their inaugural season, the eight-member team also brought home gold and silver medals from every competition competition they entered. Tara Fowler-Agnew, Vanessa Reeve, Lori Durand Nodes, Robyn Parashyniak,. Shannon Murdock Savage, Kirsten Mills, Joy Simon and coach Teri Pearce earned their berth to the Worlds in Edmonton when they captured three gold medals at the earlier earlier Canadian National Masters Synchro . Swim Championships in Toronto. "We are thrilled with our results this year," says coach Pearce, who also swims with the team. "While we all had previous previous synchronized swimming experience, we had not swam competitively for 10 years." '-A'M Now in their 20s, most of the women have known each other since age ll when they swam with the Durham club. Durham Synchro provides recreational, recreational, competitive and Masters swimming opportunities to more than 100 swimmers swimmers in Durham Region, and is one of the largest synchronized swimming clubs in Ontario. Marie, Mich. "When I left, I didn't believe at all that I would be coming back here," said the 20-year-old Oke during a press conference held by the Eagles at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex. "I thought I would continue my hockey career at university." While Lake Superior State offered him Jeff.Oke a free ride to the Division I school, Oke didn't get off to a great start when training camp opened last season, having having shed more than 20 pounds from his 6-foot-3,215-pound frame.as a result of mononucleosis. With first impressions counting for a lot, Oke wasn't ready to compete at that level, needing time to regain both his strength and cardio level. By the time he did, he was behind the others on the school's roster. It was suggested to the former 12th round draft choice (2002) of the Oshawa Generals that he go back to the Eagles, get his game and body back in shape, and then return to Lake Superior State next season for the final three years of his university eligibility. The motivation for this season is simple simple enough: getting back to where he came from. "They (Lake Superior State) won't take me back if 1 only get five goals and two assists. They know I have to do something. something. I know I have to prove myself. I'm not coming back here to fool around just because I played here before." Coach Curtis Hodgins says Oke is a welcomed addition, bringing energy, enthusiasm and leadership qualities ; along with an element the team was missing from its roster last season. "He's a big power forward that we were severely lacking last year. He drives the net well and is fairly skilled for a big guy. He creates a lot of room for his linemates" In his lone season with the Eagles, Oke contributed 16-19-35 totals while racking up 86 minutes in penalties in 44 games. Oke and the rest of his teammates will hit the ice on Sunday, Aug. 21 for the start of training camp. f) LIVE ENTERTAINMENT % EVERY WED. - 7 PM "OIDLYWED * GAME" 600 Grandview, Oshawa 905-436-1476 SAMPLE QUOTE Premium Plus tax Contents : .. $250,000 Additional Living Expenses .... $50,000 fllBIMKMMMMHHHMI Voluntary Medical Payments... $2,000 'Above quote includes 25% discounts.
