Halfway through the summer he is now the proud owner of a T-shirt company company called Stack'd, with his products hanging in Oshawa's poptdar Alcatraz skate and snowboard store. : "I'm learning a lot about marketing, : balancing my" time, and just running i a business," Mr. Appleton said. "It's ■ a good experience because one day ■ I'd like to have a career related to I design." ( Summer Company, -offered by the ; Ministry of Enterprise, Opportunity , and Innovation, helps students between ; the ages of 15-29 get a business off the | ground by providing start-up funding, ■ mentoring and training. ' The program is coordinated locally ! by the Business Advisory Centre Dur- 5 ham (BACD). Budding entrepreneurs j are required to apply with a detailed : business plan and cash flow forecast • in the spring. If accepted, they are l matched with a volunteer business ; mentor and provided with 12 hours of | hands-qn training and up. to $3,000 in j funding. •'•*;'•* : !V_. Jason Liebregts/ The Canadian Statesman Chris Appleton, left, and Billy Knight with the help of Katie Gabel, centre, were decorating the Oshawa of Chamber Commerce window display to promote their businesses with the support of the Summer Company Young Entrepreneur Program. Chris, from Courtice runs Stack'd, a company that designs t-shirts and is selling them at Alcatraz and Billy runs Performance Performance Edge Water Sports in Scugog Mr. Appleton said Alcatraz owner Jason King has been a great mentor, walking him through the intricacies of" owning a small business. 1 Stack'd now offers a line of five T-shirt designs, which Mr. Appleton creates using a combination of hand drawing and graphic design programs.
