The Canada Day RIDE was part of Durham police's "Staying Alive in 2005" road safety initiative. , Invites fellow mayors to take part BY LESLEY BOVIE Staff writer DURHAM -- Oshawa Mayor John Gray is calling for a roundtable of his peers to discuss the. operations of Lak- eridge Health Corporation. The move is a meant to be a more conciliatory approach than the ministerial ministerial review recently called for by Scugog Mayor Marilyn Pearce, he said. "Municipalities themselves don't have a direct responsibility for health care," Mayor Gray said in an interview. "But it's vitally important each one of our communities have proper health care in our communities." If mayors who serve in the Lak- eridge Health Corporation's jurisdiction respond favourably to his invitation sent out late last week, Mayor Gray said the mayors' roundtable could take place in the next two weeks. That would allow mayors to take any resolutions back to their councils before the summer break, he said. "I'm glad focus has been brought to the problem because the hospital needs fixing," said Mayor Pearce. "It's not working for the average person no matter matter what the glossy magazines (from Lakeridge Health) say." . The roundtable would aim to better understand the challenges neighbouring municipalities may face and how, as a united front, they can ensure one another receives the highest possible quality of care. Service restrictions or closures at one site ultimately impact service levels at each of Lakeridge's other locations, Mayor Gray said. "We have to look at the whole picture," he said, adding if other mayors would agree, the hospital could make a presentation presentation to the roundtable. Marion Saunders, the new chairwoman of the board of trustees at Lakeridge Health, said she was "delighted" with the idea of a mayors' roundtable. "We welcome the effort of Mayor Gray in bringing everyone together," she said. "Certainly we are challenged by our deficit. deficit. Any help we can get in getting that message to the ministry is welcome." Lakeridge's books have always been open, and the corporation has worked hard to meet the needs of residents in Scugog, said Ms. Saunders. "Lakeridge Health has no intention of closing their hospital. We've assured them that many times," she said. OF EDEN' 600 Grandview, Oshawa 905-436-1476 V TABRIήSD CANADA'S LARGEST CAcmnN farrip.
