PAGE 2 ♦ THE CANADIAN STATESMAN ♦ MAY 4,2005 durhamregion.com Claringtoa Leading the Way ^ 905-623-3379 info@clarington.net MAYOR'S CORIVER YOUR LIBRARY KEEPS MOVING FORWARD In 2004, the Clarington Public Library: • Welcomed 301,184 visitors into its four branches • Answered 48,662 reference questions • Loaned 160,637 items ranging from books to DVDs • Received 60,842 visitors to its website (www.clarington-library.on.ca) • Hosted 11,611 children and parents at 391 early literacy programs These statistics show that our local public library system is truly a community resource that the residents of Clarington enjoy, use and value. As a Library Board member, taxpayer and Mayor, it is gratifying to see such a response to the library's services. It is also amazing to know the skill level of the library staff. They can reliably answer questions questions ranging from "What does a Bohr-Rutherford diagram for radon look like?" to "What can I read that is similar to The Da Vinci Code?" New Strategic Plan The Library Board has finalized a new Strategic Plan. Stemming from this plan is the Board's vision that Clarington Public Library is seen as an essential and valued service and is the informational heart of the community. In its first step with this new vision, the Board is studying the library needs in Newcastle Village. With an expected 43% population increase over the next ten years, the current 4,000 square foot facility will not adequately handle the growing needs of the community. The Library Board wants to develop a clear strategy for the location, general general design, service improvements and cost estimates of a new library facility in Newcastle. We want to hear from all of the community of this topic. Watch for announcements on public meetings and other ways to provide your opinion on the plans for a new library in Newcastle Village. The Clarington Public Library is leading the way by offering services and programs that benefit everyone living in this community. I encourage all residents residents to discover it for themselves. This is strictly not acceptable under the safe schools act and all students found with a knife on them whether theirs or not will be automatically suspended from school. If any threats have been made while being in possession possession of the knife it could result in Police Charges and the youth being arrested.
