Espresso Legato Coffee House is providing a venue for young artists, opening up the microphone to members of the School Association of Student Songwriters (SASS). Mary-Ann Kalotai of Espresso Legato recently went to a recital of SASS members in Ajax and said • she was "absolutely amazed at the talent of the students, students, and the positive atmosphere of creativity and expression." After seeing thel students in action, Ms. Kalotai got in touch with SASS founders Artemis Chartier, a Durham teacher, and Dale Russell, formerly a guitarist guitarist with The Guess Who, to set up the Thursday Night Gig, which now runs weekly at the coffee house, 50 King St. E., from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. "This is casual, a chance for them to be heard and play in a not-quite-so-normal surrounding like a school," said Mr. Russell. "It's a chance for us to see them progress, take a step." SASS was launched in 2003, and now boasts clubs at 50 schools throughout Durham Region. With help from teachers and visiting musicians, the students write and share songs, participate in recitals and visit recording studios. The Espresso Legato gig is a good way to give the students a chance to be heard, said Mr. Russell. "It's always nice to make a friend like Mary-Ann," said'Mr. Russell. "She cares a great deal about the kids and wants to give them an opportunity in her community. We're always looking for those opportunities." opportunities."
