As soon as a storm begins, staff takes action. There are a number of factors to consider (including temperature, temperature, future forecasts and precipitation) precipitation) when determining how and when plowing, salting or sanding begins. Our crew responds to an average of 40 winter snow events each year. Over the past six winters, January has recorded the heaviest amount of precipitation with an average of 23 snow days. The Municipality is divided into three sections. There is a supervisor' responsible for each section covering about 9 snow routes each. When a snow event occurs after normal working hours, there is a winter patrol that monitors road and weather conditions. When dangerous dangerous conditions arise, the Winter Patrol person calls in the necessary necessary personnel and equipment to make the roadways safe. The Municipality has approximately 1,700 kilometers of roadway to plow in a storm. It takes approximately 8-16 hours to plow all of the routes once the snow has stopped falling. Every storm event is different and every consideration is taken to ensure the safest and fastest cleanup of the roadway network. The timing of plowing, salting and sanding depends greatly on the duration of the storm and the total amount of snow fallen. It is normal'practice for our crews to be called in at 4:00 AM to start winter maintenance operations. This is to ensure that residents residents can travel to work; school buses can do their routes; and, that 'emergency vehicles/personnel can respond to emergency calls. Plows must maintain a minimum speed to push snow off to the side. The snow is pushed only as far as necessary to clear the roadway. Unfortunately, as some of you can appreciate, some sidewalks are very close to the roadways and therefore, it is difficult to avoid getting snow on them.'With regards to driveways, please understand that there is no practical way to avoid pushing snow into driveway entrances - it is not intentional. We contract our seniors and disabled sidewalk maintenance program. program. The contractor's priority is to clear fire halls and public buildings buildings first and then clear the sidewalks. Sidewalks and windrows are cleared within 24 hours after a snow event ends and windrows are cleared out when there is 15 cm or more at the end of the driveway. We have 637 individuals registered in our program for the 2004-2005 seasons. The Municipality provides free sand for residential use on icy walks at the Hampton Operations Yard and the Orono Operations Yard in the building outside our yards. Here are some ways that you can help us: 1. Please observe winter parking regulations. Streets that have parked vehicles on them make it difficult to be plowed. 2. Placing snow on roadways or public sidewalks is in violation with the Highway Traffic Act. 3. Give the plow trucks plenty of room to make wide turns and don't tailgate or pass the plows. Do not assume a snow plow operator sees you approaching and remember when following a plow, if you cannot see his mirrors, he cannot see you. The operator's vision may be reduced by the snow coming off the snow plow and wing. 4. Please be patient during a storm. Our roadways are cleared by priority. The Municipality's Snow .Crews will get,to ÿbuf street as soon as it is possible. Your cooperation means that all residents will be able to move about the community safely. • : ' MAYOR'S LEVEE Everyone is cordially invited to join Mayor Mutton and Members of Council at the Mayor's Levee to be held on Sunday, January 16, 2005 from 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM at the Municipal Administrative Centre 40 Temperance DAiiimonwilla VA/ia InnU fnruuarH tr> cooinn vm i ihorpl DATE: TIME: PLACE: THURSDAY, JANUARY 13, 2005 7:00 A.M.
