Dieppe and Normandy are well-known battlegrounds in Canada's war history, but how much is known of the 1,975 Canadian soldiers who fought and died in an 18-day siege of Hong Kong in 1941? ^gt. Robert "Flash" Clayton, 83, of Brechin, Brechin, was just 21 at the time. He was a member of the Royal Rifles of Canada when he, along with the Winnipeg Grenadiers, Grenadiers, fought in Hong Kong beginning the day after the attacks on Pearl Harbour -- Dec. 8,1941. Those who did not perish on the battlefield battlefield later died or suffered, as Mr. Clayton did, in prisoner-of-war camps in the Pacific at the hands of the Japanese troops. Today, Mr. Clayton is just one of 161 Hong Kong veterans still alive to spread the word about the Battle of Hong Kong. r 'Tm not a hero. I'm just a Canadian sdlider that done his job," Mr. Clayton told a group of 100 students who gathered in the library of Henry Street High School on Nov. 2 to hear his story. The Battle of Hong Kong was doomed even before it had begun, he said. The Allied leadership believed the Japanese to be inferior fighters, unable to see at night and afraid of the water. Nothing could have been further from the truth. The 75,000 Japanese soldiers attacked Hong Kong from the air, sea and land, Mr. Clayton said. To make matters worse, poor planning prevented any of the 212 Canadian Canadian military vehicles and extra ammunition ammunition from ever arriving in Hong Kong. The 1,975 Canadian soldiers were basically left to fight with rifles and bayonets. "He was one tough boy to fight, let me tell you," Mr. Clayton said of the Japanese troops. "We had only been there three weeks, and we didn't know one place from another." Wounded four times by grenades, Mr. Clayton was later transferred to a military hospital in Hong Kong, where, on Christmas Christmas Day of 1941, the allies surrendered to Japan. Canadian soldiers unable to get out of bed were bayoneted on the spot, Mr. Clayton said. Nurses were raped and killed. Soldiers who could walk were forced to carry mattresses outside, where the articles were stacked and burned with the dead. Overall, the Canadian losses were heavy in Hong Kong: 554 soldiers died in combat or in the POW camps. Mr. Clayton, however, however, said he wasn't worried about dying. "I never, anytime I was in the prison camps, I never thought I wouldn't come home.
