Former Eagles fly with the Hawks BY RAUL FUTHEY Staff Writer TORONTO - The season may be over for the Uxbridge Bruins and Port Perry MoJacks, but alumni of the two Junior C hockey clubs have contributed mightily to the success of an Ontario collegiate provincial champion. The Humber College Hawks won their first OCAA men's hockey title in 14 years by edging the St. Clair Saints in the third and deciding game of the championship final. Backstopping the college club was goaltender Nick Grainger, an Uxbridge native and former former Bruin who made an eye-popping 79 saves in the series clincher: a 2-1 double overtime heart-stopper. He offered a simple explanation for his performance. "The puck looked really big," said Grainger. "It was a nice feeling. I wish that feeling was every day." Grainger's playing career prior to Humber also included one season with the Provincial Junior A Bowmanvillc Eagles. He then returned to his hometown hometown for his final two years of junior eligibility. eligibility. The second, 2002, was a magical magical campaign in which the Bruins advanced advanced all the way to the seventh game of the Ontario final before losing to Essex. With his junior career wrapped up, Grainger, 22, is now in his second year at Humber in the police foundation program program and is set to return for one more season. ; Seth Gray, a Port Perry native, is a teammate of Grainger's with the Hawks, in two seasons at Humber, Gray has racked up 60 points in 29 games, winning the league scoring title in the 2002-03 season. Should Gray continue on to the college's firefighting program, he, too, will be back on the ice for the Hawks next season. Gray's junior career included a stint with his hometown team, the MoJacks, plus three seasons at the A level, predominantly predominantly with the Eagles and briefly with the Lindsay Muskies. He was awed by his teammate's recent recent performance. "I've never seen such a display of goaltending in a game I've been a part of," Gray remarked. The championship win was a redemption redemption of sorts for Grainger, who had been pulled the previous outing - a 6-3 loss in Game 2 - after giving up four goals in 16 minutes. The best-of-three series opener was also extended to overtime, overtime, with Plumber prevailing 4-3. After a semifinal win over Seneca (11-4) (during which Grainger credited Gray with a number of "huge" goals), Humber faced the two time defending champion Saints (13-2). DURHAM KIA kià PRE-OWNED SPECIALS The second contest for the Kinsmen Kinsmen was a battle against NobleKing that ended in a shootout. After playing playing to a 3-3 tie, it took until the seventh seventh round of a shootout for NobleKing NobleKing to prevail with a 4-3 decision. Goals came from Green, Tyler Stirling, Stirling, and Colin Safian. Green, Stirling Stirling and McKeen all had helpers in this terrific battle. In the B final, Kinsmen came up short against hometown rival Top Vinyl in a 4-2 loss on goals by Van- Gog and Young. The lone assist went to Warwick. 520 TAUNTON RD. E.
