4 PAGE 6 THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, MARCH 17,2004 Abilities Centre seeks public input www.durhamregion.com Keep your licence t plates screwed on tight DURHAM -- It's not just your car you need to worry about being i stolen. Vehicle licence plates arc also in demand. j In just two days, Durham Region police have received reports ol hall a dozen licence plates that have gone missing, either lost or stolen. If it's a case of theft, it's not difficult difficult to figure out why a person with a bad driving record or a traffic-related traffic-related conviction would want to take somebody clse's plates. Plates are sometimes stolen so thieves can register their own car under different numbers. And, according according to authorities, thieves often take plates from cars similar to their own. Another reason may simply be that the thief doesn't want to pay for licence plates. But Sgt. Paul Malik, spokesman for the Durham Region police ; says this time of year is olten when police police receive more than the usual number of missing licence plates reports. "People are getting ready for spring," he says. "Maybe they've parked in a snow bank and have just now noticed a plate missing. We do see a slight increase at this time of year when people are starting to clean the salt off their vehicle, or if it's been parked for a while." If your plates have been lost, stolen or damaged, the following documentation must be taken to a Driver and Vehicle Licence Issuing office: * Replacement Declaration filled out by the owner and the police or telephone reporting occurrence number (only required if both plates, the plate with the validation sticker affixed or trailer plate is lost/stolen); * the remaining plate if you have it; * name of your insurance company and policy number; * the vehicle permit (plate and vehicle vehicle portions); • * Application for registration completed completed and signed by the vehicle owner.
