The former federal New Democratic Party leader and MP for Oshawa Hew across the country Monday night to endorse Oshawa riding candidate Sid Ryan and current provincial leader Howard Hampton. "It feels like old times." he told a cheering crowd at Mr. Ryan's headquarters at King Street and Park Road, as supporters held up tattered, tattered, old 'Re-elect Ed Broadbent' signs in the background. ' "I felt a particular sense of urgency (to be here) because because I think we can win it." he said, echoing Mr. Hampton Hampton who predicted the riding riding would be returned to the NDP. Conservative incumbent Jerry Ouellette, along with Liberal Chris Topple, Paul McKeever from the Freedom Freedom Party and Karen Twee- dle of the Green Party are also running for Oshawa riding. Born to an autoworker's family in Oshawa in 1936, Mr. Broadbent studied at the University of Toronto and the London School of Economics before joining the political science department department at York University in 1965. He was first elected to the House of Commons in 1968 and was elected NDP leader in 1974. He lead the party through two of its most successful campaigns ever: In 1984, the party earned 30 seats, and in 19S8, it look 43 - the most in NDP history. But Monday night was not about NDP policy, he said. "I'm not going to pretend pretend to be a backroom strategist," he said. "I'm here to make some small contribution while I still can." Public endorsements are not new to Mr. Broadbent, who threw his support behind behind federal NDP leader Jack Layton during his leadership candidacy late last year. Mr. Broadbent retired as leader in December 1989 and went on to found the International International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Democratic Development. He currently currently teaches at McGill University in Montreal. He flew in for the Monday night event after a speaking engagement in Vancouver. Mr. O'Toole added he's getting a different impression knocking on doors. "Our polls are knocking on doors and there's a large percentage percentage of undecided." Mr. O'Toole said. Mr. Eves touched on campaign issues during his 15-minute speech, pointing to the government's government's achievements over the past eight years. "Politics is all about choices, very clear choices. There's the choice between a prosperous economy economy or returning to the failed policies policies of the Liberals and NDP," Mr. Eves stated. "It's between tax cuts and tax hikes." Standing at the podium, he said there are "three tax cutters up here", as he, Mr. Flaherty and Ms. Ecker have all served as finance ministers. Mr. Eves stated Mr. McGuinty "admitted for the first time last week he's going to raise your taxes by $1 billion.
