The Comfort lone by Glenn Trider Fireplaces & Stoves Part 2 Gas fired products: ('.as fired hearth products have been available for some time. Originally most were crude units resembling gas logs which were inserted into an open wood burning fireplace. A gas line was run into the fireplace and when put in operation usually manually by lighting it vou would have a gas fire. Although todays gas log sets are much more sophisticated in look with features like remote controls, the same inefficiencies still exist. At best in fall, you're going to feel some radiant heat on your face and body. At the worst it is consuming a large amount of fuel, producing little- heat and the draft up the chimney results in large amounts of air from inside the house to be drawn into the opening &• up the fine. The flue on these fireplaces is usually removed as interlocking with the gas logs is difficult to do. As a result'large amounts of heal from the .-It ' house are lost. A better & much more efficient method is to insta (ias Insert. I what's called a (.as Inserts: Are engineered fireplaces designed to fit into a regular masonry or other non combustible fireplace. Tlicv come in different physical sizes and shapes and are of the conventional or direct out type. Conventional gas fired inserts use a liner which is necessary to safely converge the flue products up the chinmev. It uses air for the lire from inside your home. They represent the bulk of insert sales as they are cheaper to buy, and consume a very small controlled amount of air. For extremely air tight homes a direct vent insert may be desirable. Here the combustion air for the fire comes from a second liner installed up chimney. It's main advantage is that it «'ill not depressurize an airtight home causing other appliances to malfunction or even cause them to spill carbon monoxide into the house. As always it is best to have a qualified individual with experience evaluate which type of inserts come with built in circulating fans, although some models such as Valor are designed as radiant models and therefore do not require fans. Other types of fireplaces: The newer type of gas fireplaces is the direct vent type, which can be installed in initially any location. Usually installed on outside walls. It vents out the wall thru a vent terminated on the wall. It's huge advantage is in most implications it can vent out the rear, allowing no chimney to he installed on the outside of the house. It's direct vent design means that air from outside is brought in for combustion rather than using indoor air and the exhaust gas is also vented out the same terminal. The sealed combustion design means that it will not affect the house as an envelope nor interferes with other gas fired appliances. So popular and inexpensive umv are the new direct vent fireplaces they have virtually eliminated the masonry fireplace once found in all new homes. As an auxiliary heating source they are excellent to add or install when a basement is being finished or in a cold room at the end of a bouse or over a garage. The aesthetics appeal and low operating cost for the benefit gained is enormous!
