www.durhamregion.com THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, JUNE 18,2003 PAGE 15 John MacLean gets unlikely Cup victory Added to New Jersey coaching staff after training camp, Oshawa native wins Lord Stanley for second time It's funny how tilings work out. Some great athletes spend years chasing championships without success (see Ernie Banks in baseball, Adam Oates in hockey) while others others taste winning with incredible incredible regularity (see Henri Richard and his 11 Stanley Cups). And then there's a guy like John MacLean, who retired retired last season after almost two decades in the NHL, able to call it quits with a championship championship ring on his finger, coming in 1995, during the prime time of his career. Championships aside, like many athletes, MacLean wasn't entirely certain how his post-hockey career would unfold. MacLean was out of hockey, but it was difficult to take the hockey out of MacLean. So the Oshawa native phoned his long-time boss, New Jersey president Lou Lamoriello, to sec if the Devils Devils might be interested in his services in some capacity. "He said I could come back, maybe work the alumni alumni or with some promotional stuff," says MacLean. It sounded promising, so MacLean ventured down to the Meadowlands. While alumni work and promotional stuff technically is hockey-related, MacLean wasn't getting the sound of blades on ice, pucks booming booming off the end boards, the smell of sweat and success. So, during training camp, he kept heading down to the rink, checking out the action. Next thing you know, MacLean's on the ice, helping helping the team's minor league prospects under the guidance of head coach Pat Bums. "I mentioned I'd like to get more involved," says MacLean, "and Burnsie asked if I'd be interested in helping coach. He said he'd ask Lou about it. After training training camp, Lou offered me a job (as an assistant coach)." His first Cup came as a key contributor contributor to the Devils' 1995 title, when MacLean put up 5-13-18 totals in 20 playoff games as New Jersey won its first championship. "It's different, definitely different," says MacLean, when asked if winning Lord Stanley's mug as a player and as a coach produces the same emotional response. response. "It's still satisfying, but it's a different feeling. The players really do it." MacLean believes because he's recently recently retired, he was able to help bridge the gap between New Jersey's head coach and the players. He also made it clear his first taste of coaching has definitely given him a bigger bigger appetite for the job. "I think I might want to get to a head coaching position," says MacLean. "I want to leam and get as much information information as possible, just go along and see what progresses. It was a good experience. experience. It's a totally different side of the game." MacLean, who has yet to sign a contract contract with the Devils for next season, isn't certain if he'll get to spend a day with the Stanley Cup, like he did in 1995 when he brought it to his parents' house in Oshawa and then paraded it around the city in a vintage Chevrolet convertible. convertible. "I'm low man on the totem pole," he says.
