Green Gaels goalie takes on the world BY BRIAN LEGREE Spoils Editor DURHAM - Kurds Wagar says lie's "half-surprised" lie'll be wearing a Canadian uniform at the World Junior Field Lacrosse Championships Championships in Baltimore later this year. Wagar, a 17-year-old goalie from Blackstock, and Zack Greer, a 17-year-old midfielder from Whitby, both made the Canadian entry for the championships, to be contested contested June 21 through to July 6. "There were a lot of good goalies there," says Wagar. a Grade 12 student at Cartwright High School. "1 was half-surprised to make it. I was kind of confident, but it's hard to believe you're on a Team Canada." The Durham duo has a lengthy history together in the game, having played in the Blue Knights field lacrosse program for close to 10 years. Both lire also prominent talents in box lacrosse. Wagar is a nctminder with the Founder's Cup champion Clarington Green Gaels, while Greer, who played most of last year's box lacrosse season season with the Whitby midgets, was called up by the Gaels during the playoffs and went on to be named a first team all-star at the Founder's Cup. This season, Greer is playing playing with the Whitby Warriors. Although both 17, it's their only chance to play at the junior junior worlds, since the under- 19 championship is held only once every four years. Like Wagar, Greer also was somewhat surprised he was named to the final roster. "I didn't think because of my age I'd make it," says the Grade 11 student at All Saints Catholic High School. Greer is one of 10 midfielders midfielders on the 23-player roster, roster, while Wagar is one of three netminders on the team. Both players are soliciting sponsorship funds to offset the anticipated $2,500 per player it will cost to participate participate in the championship.
