PAGE 6 THE CANADIAN STATESMAN, MAY 14, 2003 www.durhamrcgion.com Clarington gets permission to close Wilcox Road tunnel Residents in the area have been complaining about all-terrain vehicles and dirtbikes running illegally up their street BY JENNIFER STONE Staff Writer CLARINGTON - A Wilcox Road resident says she's cautiously optimistic optimistic weekends will be a little quieter quieter now that the Ministry of Transportation Transportation has granted conditional permission permission to close a tunnel leading offroad offroad vehicles to her street. Clarington council had asked the ministry's (MTO's) approval to close the tunnel, which leads off-road vehicles vehicles from a parking area on Hwy. 35 to Wilcox Road, last month. "Late last week, we received a letter letter from the MTO, telling us we could proceed with putting up gates at the ends of the tunnel," Tony Cannella, Clarington's director of engineering, told council Monday. The gate plans must be submitted to MTO for approval, approval, after which point, the municipality municipality will tender the job and "get the gates installed as soon as possible," says Mr. Cannella. Residents in the Wilcox Road- Hwy. Il5 area have been complaining complaining to council for some time about all-terrain vehicles and dirtbikes running running illegally up their street, causing safety, noise and dust concerns. Off- roaders, they said, had been riding from a parking lot on Hwy. 35 then through the tunnel, which runs under Hwy. Il5 in order to get to Wilcox Road to gain access to the Ganaraska Forest, where they are permitted to ride. Closing the tunnel is good news for residents, says Clarington councillor councillor Gord Robinson. "We want to put an end to the harassment harassment of the residents on Wilcox Road," notes the councillor, who recently recently raised the issue at Clarington council after receiving numerous phone calls from residents in the area. "We are very, very appreciative," says Debbie Tinmouth, a resident whose home lies directly in the path of off-roaders heading into the Ganaraska. Ganaraska. But she says her optimism is "cautious," given the fact the design of the gate has to await MTO approval. approval. "It's taken so long for us to gel this far," she says. "I would be heartsick for it to take another eight weeks" to get the gate erected. Closing the tunnel will solve the Wilcox Road residents' problems, but might push the off-roaders elsewhere, says Tony Fanara, an executive director director with the Outback ATV Club. "I think it's going to cure all the problems on Wilcox Road, but I hate to see where these people are going to go now," says Mr. Fanara, who notes his club actively discourages off- roaders from using roads illegally. "I think they've (Clarington council has) downloaded the problem." Finding riders an alternate route into the forest is important, he says. But, Clarington Mayor John Mutton Mutton says though he knows the off- roaders will "surface somewhere," he hopes they will look at legal routes. "Hopefully they will start using not the most convenient way to get in, but the best way to get in," he says.
