Three years ago, at the age of eight, the Bowmanville Bowmanville resident travelled with his parents and sister to the badminton club in Whitby Whitby for a social evening. "It was family night and I went because I had nowhere else to go," he recalls. From the first time the shuttlecock hit his racquet, there was an immediate attraction to the sport. "You have to depend on yourself and there is nobody else to blame (if things go wrong)," says the Grade 6 student at Vincent Massey Public School. Three years later, the Bowmanville resident has emerged as one of the top players in the province in his age group. At thé Ontario championships, championships, the Whitby Junior Badminton Club member earned a bronze medal in singles, singles, and reached the semifinals semifinals in doubles before getting eliminated by the number one seeded team in the province. • He followed up that strong performance at the Central Ontario Badminton Association Junior Championships, Championships, just missing out on the triple crown of gold medals. But there is the odd occasion, when he meets an unfamiliar opponent, that those competitive butterflies start fluttering around in his stomach. "With people I don't know or haven't played, I go through all the plays in my head before the match and then I feel like I can win." The season left him ranked as the number two player in the province in the under-12 age category. He credits a badminton camp in Brampton and coaches Ted Feather and Edith Hayman with helping him progress in the sport.
