Arian Higgs, 10, of Mother Teresa .School in Courtice, is the Durham Region Region winner in the Legal Aid Ontario Grade 5 poster contest, in celebration of Law Day, which is held April 15. The theme is "Freedom, Security and You." Arian says she wrote the words, 'religion," language,' 'heritage,' and 'education' in each corner, and "at the top, I put, 'We have the right.'" "I also drew a Hag and a school, and I did a border and some crosses," says Arian, who was presented with a plaque Monday by Deborah Hastings, Legal Aid area director, and Justice Margaret Scott, chairman of the Public Legal Education Committee for Durham Region. The idea for the poster stemmed from the curriculum, says Arian. "We were doing the government (in school) so that gave me ideas," she says. Arian's poster will now be submitted, submitted, along with other regional winners from across the province, to the LAO office in Toronto. A provincial first-, second- and third-prize winner will be chosen March 31. "I think my chances are pretty good," says Arian. The Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board will meet at the High Street school on Tuesday, April 8 at 7:30 p.m. to accept representations from interested parties, before making a final decision. The school is being considered for closure. It is currently bursting at the seams with 285 students in a building constructed to hold 180. A' final decision is expected by the end of April. Meanwhile, KPR held a final vote Thursday to close Maple Grove Public School in June, dispose of the building, building, and send its students to either Hampton Junior Public School or Dr. Ross Tilley Public School. Maple Grove's current population is 67 students in junior kindergarten through Grade 5. Enrolment was expected expected to drop below 60 by next September. September.
