For Ashley Chinner, it might just be the end of the road. Although both failed to make it beyond the second stage of PGA Tour qualifying school last week, the stakes were a whole lot higher for Chinner, a 39-ycar-old Brooklin resident now at a crossroads in his pro- Brian McNair Staff Writer bmcnairfldnrluunrcgion.com fcssional golf career. "I just wanted to sec if l still had it and 1 don't," says Chinner, Chinner, who seems overly hard on himself considering the circumstances circumstances lie faced last week. Despite being pretty much out of the game since moving to Brooklin three years ago, Chinner Chinner easily advanced through stage one and was in the hunt in stage two after rounds of 72-73- 72 at the Honibre Golf Course in Panama Beach, Fla., left him three strokes back of where he needed to be. But, a persistent chest cold caught up with him on the final round Friday, and Chinner withdrew withdrew after eight holes so he could return home in time to attend attend a memorial service for a close friend who died from cancer. cancer. "That's what tour school is about, it's all about timing," Chinner says of the unfortunate turn of events. "I wasn't nearly focused enough and you have to be focused focused for i4 rounds." This was the sixth time Chinner Chinner has attended the tour school - and the first time he failed to reach the third and final round. Although he has veteran membership status on the Canadian Canadian Tour, where he has earned just over $100,000 since 1990, and could play there next year, Chinner says it's time to start making some difficult decisions about his career. "I've got a house, three kids, two cars. I've got to make a commitment to something in the near future," says Chinner, who is considering opening a golf school or sports camp in Durham Region. "I'm getting older. I'd probably probably like to help some younger players develop." Speaking of younger players, Chinner both empathizes with and envies Gillespie, a 24-year- old Oshawa resident who appears appears headed for big things. "He's got a long career ahead Lacrosse registration Saturday CLARINGTON - After a successful first season, the Clarington Minor Lacrosse Association is back with expansion expansion plans for year two.
